Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- Auburn is not a Twin XL campus. Twin XL is correct only for The Hill, The Quad and The Village. South Donahue is QUEEN. The Union and 191 College are full XL. 160 Ross is full. Four different sizes.
- The toaster ban is building-specific. Crockpots, toasters and toaster ovens are legal at Auburn generally but banned in The Hill and The Quad — the two cheapest, most freshman-heavy communities.
- Adhesive-backed LED light strips are banned by name, as are hanging blankets, tapestries and fishnets, plus a hard 50% cap on wall and window coverage.
- Extension cords are banned entirely — only surge protectors with an on/off switch.
- Half the price sheet needs no fridge or microwave at all. The Village, South Donahue, The Union, 160 Ross and 191 College all supply them. Laundry is free campus-wide.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.
| Hall | Style | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| The Hill Cheapest on campus; Twin XL bunkable beds — but toasters, toaster ovens and crockpots are banned in this building specifically. | Traditional | $3,600/sem double |
| The Quad Historic core-campus suite living; Twin XL, same building-specific toaster and crockpot ban as The Hill. | Suite | $4,600/sem double |
| South Donahue Kitchenette and in-unit washer/dryer. Queen beds — except this shared-double floor plan, the one layout excluded. | Suite | $5,800/sem double-shared |
| 160 Ross Private bed and bath, full kitchen, in-unit washer/dryer, and a plain full-size bed. | Apartment | $6,500/sem 4br/4ba |
| The Village Four single bedrooms per suite with a living area that already has a microwave and refrigerator — no MicroFridge needed. | Suite | $6,600/sem single/double |
| The Union Full XL beds, full kitchen, in-unit washer/dryer, and stays open over Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring breaks. Concourse Hall is new for 2026-27 at $7,500. | Apartment | $7,230/sem 2–4 bedroom |
Rates are per student per semester for 2026-27 — double them for the year. Meal plans are billed separately and are not included. Rates compiled from the university’s published housing rates, August 2026. Always confirm on the official rates page.
Who has to live on campus
Not required — “Living on campus is not required or guaranteed to first-year students,” and a room does not come automatically with admission. The practical problem at Auburn is securing a room at all, not getting out of one, so apply early.
What the room already includes
Bed, desk and chair and dressers per resident (The Quad gives two stackable dressers each). The rate covers all utilities, wireless internet and free laundry — Auburn does not supply detergent or a linen service. The Union, 160 Ross and 191 College are apartments with a private bed and bath, a full kitchen with microwave, fridge, dishwasher, oven and stovetop, full living room furniture and an in-unit washer and dryer. South Donahue is suite-style with a kitchenette, in-unit laundry and a wall-mounted 42-inch TV.
Fridge & microwave rules
Bring your own for The Hill and The Quad only. Fridge max 4.3 cubic feet (unusually generous) and microwave max 700 watts. Already supplied in The Village (microwave, fridge and sink in each suite living area), South Donahue (kitchenette) and the three apartment buildings, which have full kitchens.
What you cannot bring
Air conditioners, ceiling fans, halogen lamps, dishwashers, hot plates, personal washers and dryers, space heaters, 3D printers and any open-coil appliance. In The Hill and The Quad specifically: crockpots, toaster ovens and toasters. Extension cords are prohibited — only surge protectors with an on/off switch. Adhesive-backed LED light strips, adhesive shelf paper and wallpaper. Hanging blankets, tapestries and fishnets, with all other decor capped at 50% of wall or window space. Candles may be decorative only with an unburnt wick; incense is banned. Non-approved lofts and waterbeds are prohibited. Pets: fish only, up to a 20-gallon tank.
