On-campus housing: 2026-27 rates & what's included

Room dimensions are only half the story — here is what UC Santa Cruz actually charges to live on campus, what shows up in the room before you unpack, and the appliance rules that decide what you can bring.

Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules

  • A meal plan is MANDATORY in the residence halls but optional in the college apartments. That single difference is the biggest cost lever at UCSC: a hall double is about $21,249 all-in, while an apartment triple is $13,635 with no forced plan.
  • Skip the mini-fridge in college apartments and The Village — they have kitchens or kitchenettes with a full fridge. Residence hall rooms need one, and UCSC neither provides nor rents them.
  • Personal wireless routers are banned in buildings with upgraded campus WiFi — a rule students trip over constantly.
  • Also banned: space heaters, air conditioners, halogen desk lamps (LED or CFL only), and skateboards, roller skates and hoverboards inside.

Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.

Bed size: Extra-long twin, 39×80 — UCSC publishes the exact dimension. Twin XL everywhere: residence halls, college apartments and The Village. No standard twin, full or queen in undergraduate housing.

Who has to live on campusNo requirement, but as of 2026-27 UCSC guarantees two consecutive years of housing to BOTH entering first-year and entering transfer students (expanded June 2026). You must keep continuous residence during fall, winter and spring of the guaranteed years or the guarantee is voided.
What's already in the roomExtra-long twin bed and mattress, desk, chair, bookshelf and clothing storage, plus trash and recycling bins. All utilities included — electricity, water, trash and WiFi with streaming — plus 24-hour laundry. College apartments and Village houses are furnished and add a kitchen or kitchenette, bathroom and shared living room. Bedding, towels and dishes are not supplied.
Fridge & microwave rulesBring your own — UCSC does not provide or rent a MicroFridge, and personal mini-fridges and microwaves are allowed in hall rooms. Only one of each per room, so coordinate with roommates. No published size or wattage cap, so confirm with your college office before buying something oversized. Apartments and The Village have kitchens, making a mini-fridge redundant.
Leave these at homeSpace heaters and air conditioners; candles and incense; BBQ grills; cooking equipment with exposed heating elements; extension cords without surge protection; halogen desk lamps; firearms; amplified instruments; pets other than fish in tanks of 10 gallons or less; skateboards, roller skates and hoverboards; and personal wireless routers in buildings with upgraded campus WiFi.
