What on-campus housing costs at West Georgia

Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules

  • Do NOT buy a mini-fridge or microwave. UWG provides one in literally every hall and prohibits personal ones. This is the single most expensive mistake a family could make following a generic dorm checklist, and it inverts the standard advice.
  • Mattresses are 38" x 79", not 38" x 80". UWG publishes the exact number, and it is one inch short of what Twin XL bedding is cut for. UWG hedges its own guidance to “XL twin recommended” — skip a rigid 80"-exact mattress encasement or topper.
  • Bed lofts are explicitly banned and every hall publishes “not bunkable.” No loft kits and no bed risers. Bowdon and Center Pointe compensate with dressers designed to fit under the bed, and beds adjust between roughly 5" and 34.5" from the floor.
  • Extension cords and power strips are on the APPROVED list — the reverse of the usual college prohibition, and the reverse of Augusta University ninety minutes away.
  • George Foreman grills, blenders, coffee makers and popcorn poppers are all expressly permitted, while toasters and toaster ovens are banned. The dividing line is “exposed heating element,” not “cooking appliance” — a distinction most checklists get wrong in both directions.
  • Cable TV exists only in the lounges, not in rooms — a coax cable or cable box is wasted. Plan on streaming over the included Xfinity connection.

Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.

Bed size: 38" x 79" (XL Twin) — UWG publishes this identical spec for Bowdon, The Oaks, University Suites, Center Pointe and Arbor View. The width is a full 38", but note the 79-inch length, one inch short of what Twin XL bedding is cut for. A fitted sheet will work with an inch of slack; the risk is a tight mattress topper or encasement sized to exactly 80". Bunking and lofting are impossible campus-wide — every hall publishes “not bunkable.”

Rates are per semester, matching the University System of Georgia schedule. A meal plan is mandatory and billed separately — residential students without an exemption may choose only the Pack 21, Wolves or Basic plan — but UWG does not publish meal plan prices, saying only that they are subject to Board of Regents approval, so the true cost of attendance cannot be computed from UWG’s site alone. Most 2026-27 rates were held flat from the prior year. Greek members living in The Village who are not residents owe a $300 per semester comprehensive fee. Rates compiled from the university’s published housing rates, August 2026. Always confirm on the official rates page.

Who has to live on campus

UWG requires all new students to live on campus and maintain a meal plan. The requirement runs two semesters for standard students and four semesters for student-athletes; summer terms do not count. Exemptions are automatic for students who are 21 or older by the start of the semester, married, a legal parent or guardian of a child under 18, enrolled in an approved fully online undergraduate programme, living with a parent or guardian in an approved exempted ZIP code, holding 30 or more post-high-school credit hours, actively deployed military, or who have already completed two semesters of on-campus living.

What the room already includes

Every room is fully furnished with a bed, desk and chair per resident and a dresser or wardrobe, with dimensions varying by hall. Laundry is free and in-building at every hall — Center Pointe’s runs 24 hours, and The Village has a washer and dryer in every house. Internet is included via Xfinity, but cable TV is available only in the residence hall lounges, not in rooms. UWG markets housing as all-inclusive rent with no overages, and halls have apartment-controlled thermostats. Arbor View is true apartment style with a full-sized refrigerator, microwave, oven and dishwasher plus a furnished living room; The Village has a residential kitchen in each house; and University Suites is unusual for a suite hall in putting a full-sized refrigerator and microwave in the room itself.

Fridge & microwave rules

PROVIDED — and personal ones are BANNED. UWG’s acceptable-appliances document lists “personal microwave & refrigerator” under prohibited items. Every hall supplies the appliance instead: Bowdon, Center Pointe and The Oaks get a MicroFridge unit with microwave; University Suites gets a full-sized refrigerator and microwave in the room; Arbor View gets a full-sized refrigerator, microwave, oven and dishwasher; and The Village has a residential kitchen per house. No cubic-foot or wattage cap is published because there is nothing to cap.

What you cannot bring

Personal microwaves and refrigerators; anything with an exposed heating element including toasters, toaster ovens and hot plates; space heaters. Incense, candles, gasoline, open flames, potpourri burners and incendiary devices; charcoal starter fluid; fireworks. Halogen lamps and sun lamps. Bed lofts are explicitly prohibited, and furniture may not be relocated. On walls: no shelving, carpet or TV wall mounts, no painting doors, no nails or hooks in walls or ceilings, no adhesive that may damage surfaces, and no contact paper or adhesive-backed border — 3M removable Velcro strips and hooks are the approved alternative. Also banned: personal routers, ceiling fans, dart boards, power tools, hoverboards and electronic skateboards. Expressly ALLOWED, unusually: George Foreman grills, automatic coffee makers, hot air popcorn poppers, blenders, any small closed-coil appliance, non-halogen bulbs, and power strips and extension cords. Pets: small fish in bowls or aquariums up to ten gallons. ⚠ Note a conflict — the housing rules page says fish are the only pets allowed, while the University Suites page advertises pet-friendly suites in University Suites 2 with an application form and vaccination requirements.
