Olivet Nazarene publishes more about the shape of its rooms than most universities do — dimensions for all seven residence halls, and the size of the windows in five of them — while publishing nothing at all about the beds. This page collects what the university does state, in its own words, along with the rules that make Olivet different from the schools it competes with. It is a Church of the Nazarene campus: every hall is single-sex, there is a nightly curfew, and the requirement to live on campus is set by your age.
Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- The live-on requirement is set by your age, not your year. Olivet’s words: it “maintain[s] a residential campus policy that requires students 22 years or younger to live on campus unless the student is a commuter.” Most schools write this as “freshmen and sophomores” or a credit-hour threshold. Here a 21-year-old senior is still required to live on campus, and a 23-year-old freshman is not.
- Every room already has a fridge, freezer and microwave. All seven residence halls carry the same line — “Each room comes with a fridge, freezer, and microwave combo unit.” Do not buy one, and do not budget for a rental.
- There is a curfew, and it applies to seniors. In-hours are 1 a.m. nightly in Parrott, Williams, Nesbitt and Chapman, and 1 a.m. Sunday–Thursday, 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday in Howe, Hills, McClain and the campus apartments. Olivet states plainly: “Late passes are not issued.” Overnight passes are available through Residential Life.
- Opposite-sex visiting is twelve hours a week. Open house in the residence halls runs Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, 7–11 p.m. only. Guests sign in through a link and monitors make periodic rounds. The apartments get far more: Monday–Friday 4–11 p.m. and weekends noon–11 p.m.
- Olivet publishes window sizes but not bed sizes. Five halls list their window dimensions to the half-inch. The mattress size is not on any public page — the furniture list sits behind the housing portal, which you reach after you enrol.
- By the university’s own figures, living off campus costs more than living on it. Its 2026–27 cost of attendance totals $62,599 off campus against $60,604 on campus.
- And the off-campus housing line is $0. Olivet enters nothing under “Housing & Meals” for off-campus students and puts the money in “Personal Expenses” at $19,180 — a line that reads $3,400 for students in the halls.
- Transportation is funded for residents and not for commuters. The same table allows $725 for transportation on campus and $0 both off campus and living with parents.
Measure your mattress at move-in before buying sheets, and bring a rug if you are in Hills or Howe — those rooms are tiled.
Freshman halls
All seven of Olivet’s residence halls are single-sex, and the university publishes room dimensions for every one of them — plus, unusually, the size of the windows. That second number is worth having before you buy curtains or a fan.
| Hall | Who lives there | Room | Window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chapman | Freshman men, about 200 | Two-person 11′ × 18′; three-person 11′ × 24′ | Not published |
| Nesbitt | Freshman men, 150 | Two-person 10′ × 14′ | One, 51″ w × 63″ l |
| Williams | Freshman women | Two-person 11 × 14, some three-person, plus four suites (two rooms sharing a private bathroom) | One, 40″ w × 53″ l |
| Parrott | Freshman women | Two-person 11′ × 11′ | Not published |
Chapman has high ceilings, its own laundry and community restrooms in the middle of each floor. Nesbitt is four storeys with step-free access and laundry on every floor, and its lobby holds Simply to Go, a lunchtime dining area open to the whole campus. Williams puts its laundry in the lower level next to a full-size kitchen. Parrott has a dorm chapel on the second floor and a TV room on the third.
Upperclassman and transfer halls
| Hall | Who lives there | Room | Window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hills | Upperclass men, over 190 | Two-person 11′ × 11′ | Two, 36.5″ × 64″ |
| Howe | Upperclass women | Two-person 11′6″ × 20′, with a bathroom in every room | Not published |
| McClain | Upperclass women, about 190 | Two-person 11 × 14 | Two, 35″ w × 53″ l |
Hills and Howe are tiled, not carpeted — Olivet says rooms in both are tiled “with the option of laying temporary carpet”, so budget for a rug. Howe is the one hall where every room has its own bathroom; its lounge sits between the two wings with a kitchen in the corner. Hills has a kitchen and dining area off its common room. McClain has community bathrooms, a study area and a small utility area on all four floors, a dorm chapel on the second floor and a TV room on the third.
Apartments
Upperclassmen can also apply for apartments. Grand, University Place and Stadium sit on the perimeter of campus; Olde Oak and Stratford are off campus but still Olivet-administered. All are three- or four-person units with their own bathroom, kitchen, living room and bedrooms, and each complex has its own laundry. Two things to know before you treat an apartment as an escape from the rules: the curfew still applies, and so does the open-house schedule — it is simply more generous than in the halls.
What it costs (2026–27)
| Line | On campus | With parents | Off campus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition | $41,450 | $41,450 | $41,450 |
| General fee | $990 | $990 | $990 |
| Housing & meals | $12,290 | $0 | $0 |
| Unlimited meals option | $770 | $0 | $0 |
| Books | $920 | $920 | $920 |
| Transportation | $725 | $0 | $0 |
| Personal expenses | $3,400 | $5,800 | $19,180 |
| Loan fees | $59 | $59 | $59 |
| Total cost of attendance | $60,604 | $49,219 | $62,599 |
Three things in this table are worth arguing with before you rely on it. Olivet enters $0 for housing and meals off campus and moves the money into “personal expenses”, so there is no published estimate of what renting in Bourbonnais actually costs. Its off-campus total comes out $1,995 higher than its on-campus total, which is the opposite of what students usually find. And it allows $725 for transportation on campus and nothing at all for commuters, which is backwards. Olivet also publishes one bundled housing-and-meals figure rather than a room rate, so there is no way to compare a hall against an apartment rent from this page.
