What WKU housing actually costs

Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules

  • WKU contradicts itself on mattress length. Hall pages publish 36"W x 84"L x 8"H; the Housing FAQ says 80" x 36". Both agree on 36" wide — two inches narrower than a retail Twin XL — and an 84" mattress is not a Twin XL at all.
  • Center Hall has queen beds, plus a full-size sleeper sofa in every room. Campus Flats and Kentucky Street Apartments have full-size beds. Twin XL bedding is simply wrong in all three.
  • Lava lamps are banned by name, alongside air fryers, dartboards, contact paper, and wall and ceiling stickers. So are all multi-outlet extension cords and power taps — only UL-listed surge protectors for computer and TV equipment are allowed.
  • Bed risers, homemade lofts, concrete blocks and bunking are all prohibited. "Beds cannot be bunked in residence hall rooms." The frames adjust across 17 height settings instead.
  • The live-on requirement is two years, and dual-credit or AP hours do not buy you out of year one — "all first-time, full-time students who graduated high school within the last 12 months must live on campus regardless of total credit hours earned."
  • Sign a lease without a written exemption and WKU can bill you for a dorm anyway. The late-exemption fee has an odd shape too: $150, charged only if the exemption is granted.
  • The fridge cap is 5.0 cubic feet, and the handbook caps microwaves at 1 cubic foot as well as 1,000 watts — stricter than the Move-In Guide, which mentions only the wattage.
  • Douglas Keen Hall is still listed as an active hall but has no 2026-27 rate — it and Hugh Poland are being demolished for a 1,000-bed replacement opening Fall 2028.

Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first, especially if you are in Center Hall.

Per semester, double occupancy. A private or single room is 1.4 times the double rate — WKU publishes the multiplier rather than a dollar table. Meal plans are billed separately and are mandatory for first-year students under 21, running $946 to $2,730 a semester. There is also a non-refundable $75 housing application fee, and Pearce Ford Tower residents pay $500 extra for winter-break housing.

Fridge & microwave rules

Not supplied in ordinary residence hall rooms — the halls advertise floor kitchens instead. Center Hall is the exception and supplies a mini-fridge. Personal units are allowed: refrigerators up to 5.0 cubic feet, and microwaves capped at 1,000 watts and one cubic foot in the Hilltopics handbook, which is stricter than the Move-In Guide. Coffee pots are fine, and dehumidifiers are allowed only with an auto-off feature. WKU publishes no MicroFridge rental programme.

What you cannot bring

Candles and candle warmers, incense, open flames, halogen and sun lamps, lava lamps, space heaters, hot plates, toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, electric grills, six-way adapters, power taps, electrical bars and multi-outlet extension cords, waterbeds, concrete and cinder blocks, bed risers, homemade lofts, bunking, contact paper, wall and ceiling stickers, dartboards, drones, hoverboards and electric skateboards, firearms, pellet guns, tasers, stun guns, paintball guns and slingshots. Only UL-listed surge protectors for computer and TV equipment are permitted. One fish tank under 10 gallons per resident is the only pet allowance.

Who has to live on campus

Two full years. All full-time undergraduates must live on campus for two years, and all first-time full-time students who graduated high school within the last 12 months must live on campus regardless of credit hours earned — so dual-credit and AP hours do not buy you out of year one. Eight exemptions are published: veterans with 181 or more days of service, married students, primary caregivers of dependent children, turning 21 before the first day of classes, fraternity or sorority members in a chapter house with two semesters on campus and 30-plus hours, commuting from a parent or guardian home within 50 miles, 60-plus earned hours together with two semesters lived on campus, and special circumstances. Requests are due by the first Friday of classes; filed later, a $150 fee applies but only if the exemption is granted. Sign a lease before you have a written decision and WKU can still bill you for a room.

Rates and rules from WKU residence hall rates, compiled August 2026. WKU's own pages disagree on mattress length — hall pages say 84 inches, the Housing FAQ says 80. Douglas Keen is still listed as an active hall but carries no rate; it and Hugh Poland are being demolished. Call (270) 745-4359 or email hrl@wku.edu.
