What on-campus housing costs at Central Michigan

Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules

  • CMU publishes its Twin XL as 36″ wide by 80″ long — two to three inches narrower than the width most Twin XL sheets are cut for. The figure is identical on every hall page we checked, the 1960s Towers and the newest buildings alike.
  • University Apartments use QUEEN beds, not Twin XL — a completely different bedding purchase from the halls.
  • Microwaves are banned in every hall except Campbell, Celani, Fabiano, Kesseler and Kulhavi. If your student is assigned anywhere else, a microwave is simply not allowed. Fridges are bring-your-own everywhere, capped at 4.3 cubic feet.
  • Personal lofts are banned — but bed risers are explicitly permitted, because the university bed already raises through ten positions. Do not buy a loft kit.
  • Air conditioning is not universal, and you may not bring your own. Kesseler and Celani state air conditioning; the Emmons, Sweeney, Troutman, Woldt and Wheeler pages do not mention it at all. Personal units and evaporative coolers need a disability accommodation.
  • LED strip lights may not be stuck to walls or furniture — Command strips only, same rule for string lights. Power strips are limited to one per resident.
  • An unauthorised pet costs $50 plus $25 a day. Fish only, tanks up to 20 gallons.

Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.

Per semester, housing only. There is no single rate sheet on the CMU site — every figure below comes off the individual hall pages, and each of those states plainly that the meal plan is required and billed separately. The board held standard housing flat for 2026-27 while raising other options $134–$230 a semester and food plans $122. We could not retrieve exact meal prices — the dining vendor blocks automated access — so ring 989-774-3111. CMU’s own cost-of-attendance estimate puts housing and food together at $13,360 a year.

Fridge & microwave rules

Bring your own fridge, capped at 4.3 cubic feet — nothing is supplied and there is no compulsory rental, though CMU partners with Bedloft.com if you want a loft-combo unit. Microwaves are the catch: they are only permitted in Campbell, Celani, Fabiano, Kesseler and Kulhavi. In Emmons, Herrig, Saxe, Woldt, Beddow, Merrill, Sweeney, Thorpe, Carey, Cobb, Troutman and Wheeler they are not allowed at all. The University Apartments are different again and come with a full stainless appliance package including a microwave and dishwasher.

What you cannot bring

Extension cords, outlet adapters and multi-plugs — only power strips with a built-in circuit breaker, one per resident. LED strips adhered to walls or furniture; Command strips only. Candles, candle warmers, lanterns and incense. Popcorn poppers, electric grills, toaster ovens and any other heating or cooking device — which takes in air fryers, toasters and Instant Pots. Coffee makers are the stated exception. Personal lofts, though bed risers are fine. Electric and kerosene heaters, lava lamps, halogen bulbs. Weapons including toy guns. Pets other than fish in tanks of 20 gallons or less, with a $50 fine plus $25 a day. No drilling, nailing, gluing or screwing into any surface.

Who has to live on campus

First and second-year students, four semesters in total — and if you hit the four-semester mark mid-year you still finish the annual contract. Early Middle College students count as first-years and owe the full two years. Transfers may choose. Exemptions: living with a parent or guardian within 60 miles, married and living with your spouse, a veteran with a year or more of active service, or 21 and over. Requests go in writing to reslife@cmich.edu. CMU does not publish any penalty for non-compliance — ring 989-774-3111 if you need to know.
