What Western Michigan housing actually costs

Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules

  • WMU states outright that it cannot give you a bed measurement — the bring-list says twin extra-long, but the furniture page says verbatim that the university is unable to provide dimensions of furniture items in specific rooms. That includes the apartments.
  • Henry Hall and all of Valley 1 have no air conditioning, and AC units are banned — Valley 1 covers Ackley/Shilling and Britton/Hadley. Western Heights and the new Valley Oaks are air-conditioned.
  • The published appliance limit bans an ordinary microwave — the only rule WMU gives is a combined draw under 1.5 amps. A normal 900-watt microwave alone pulls about 7.5 amps. No cubic-foot cap is published at all.
  • Homemade and personal lofts are banned outright — only university lofts may be used, adjustable from 18 inches to over 60. A futon up to 82 inches wide fits underneath.
  • No live-on requirement is published anywhere — WMU says 91% of first-years live in the halls, but that is a statistic, not a rule. No page states a requirement, an exemption process or a penalty.

Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.

Per semester for halls; per bed per month for apartments. Every hall rate rose 3.5% on 2025-26, and a meal plan is bundled into all of them except a Britton/Hadley room-only option. Traditional halls carry an extra $25-per-semester deferred-maintenance fee. WMU’s own apartments are billed per bed per month with no dining requirement at all.

Fridge & microwave rules

Nothing is supplied — bring your own fridge and microwave. The only published rule is that their combined draw must stay under 1.5 amps, with no cubic-foot cap given anywhere. Taken literally that rule rules out a standard microwave, so ask housing what they actually enforce. An optional Ecomax rental is offered through MyCollegeFridge but is not mandatory.

What you cannot bring

Air fryers, toasters, Instant Pots, candles and wax warmers, space heaters, halogen bulbs, hoverboards, personal wireless routers, homemade or personal lofts, window and portable air conditioners, extension cords (breaker-protected power strips only), peel-and-stick adhesive LED strips, tobacco and vapes, weapons and waterbeds. Fish tanks up to 20 gallons. Bed risers and tapestries are not addressed either way.

Who has to live on campus

Not published. No fetched WMU page states a live-on requirement, an exemption process or a penalty for moving off campus. The fast-facts page notes that 91% of first-year students live in the halls, which reads as a description rather than a rule. Ring housing on (269) 387-4735 before assuming you are free to sign a lease.

Rates and rules from WMU housing rates, compiled August 2026. Board PDFs still call the newest hall “Golden Oaks”; it was renamed Valley Oaks in February 2026 and the live pages are authoritative on the name.
