What on-campus housing costs at Mizzou
Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- Mizzou publishes a bed number nobody can interpret. Every hall page shows either “36″ bed” or “60″ loft bed” with no stated meaning and no length anywhere on the site. It never says whether that is mattress width, frame width or loft height.
- Respect Hall says 36″. Responsibility Hall says 60″. Two near-identical suite halls, built in the same era, with different published numbers. The 36/60 split does not track community versus suite, or old versus new — it is building by building: 36″ at Hatch, Schurz, Center, Respect, Excellence, Dogwood and South; 60″ at Responsibility, Brooks and Mark Twain.
- The move-in checklist separately says to bring “twin-size sheets (80″)”, which points at a Twin XL length — but that is a packing hint, not a specification. Call 573-882-7275 before you buy bedding.
- No LED self-adhesive strip lighting, and no halogen bulbs. Extension cords and multi-plug adapters are banned outright.
- Air fryers, toasters, toaster ovens and electric grills are prohibited in rooms. So, oddly, is powdered laundry detergent.
- Every hall has air conditioning, including the older community buildings — Hatch, Schurz and Brooks included. That is worth knowing, because plenty of comparable campuses do not.
- The live-on exemptions are unusually broad. You are exempt if you are 21, taking under six credits, in an approved Greek or student-organisation house, a veteran, married or a parent, living with a guardian within 60 miles, or if you or your parents own property inside Columbia city limits.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.

Fridge & microwave rules
Bring your own. A microwave up to 1,000 watts, one per room, and a UL-approved mini-fridge up to 4.5 cubic feet, one per bedroom. A third-party MicroFridge rental exists through a vendor, but Mizzou never makes it mandatory — the “only combo permitted” wording you may see is the vendor advertising, not university policy. Buying your own within the limits is fine.
What you cannot bring
Extension cords and multi-plug adapters. LED self-adhesive strip lighting and halogen bulbs. Air fryers, toasters, toaster ovens and electric grills. Candles, oil lamps and open flame. Space heaters. Powdered laundry detergent. Weapons. Pets other than approved fish. Tapestries need an approved hanging method, and adhesive wall stickers and vinyl appliqués are discouraged because you will be billed for the damage. Instant Pots are not named in writing, but they sit squarely inside the cooking-appliance ban.
Who has to live on campus
Required of first-time college students — but the exemption list is one of the widest we have seen. You are out if you are 21 or older, enrolled in fewer than six credit hours, living in a recognised fraternity, sorority or approved student-organisation house, a veteran, married or a student-parent, living with a parent or guardian within 60 miles, or if you or your parents own property within Columbia city limits. Exemptions are requested through the housing portal. Mizzou does not publish what happens if you ignore the requirement.
