What Montclair State housing actually costs

Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules

  • Montclair State publishes no bed dimensions at all — not for the halls, not for the apartments. Every furniture reference says only that a room contains a bed, a desk and a desk chair.
  • The room-rates page was a year out of date when checked — it still read 2025–2026 in August 2026, while the meal-plan page had moved to 2026-27. Confirm any figure you are budgeting against.
  • A meal plan is mandatory even in the apartments — plus a separate $305-per-semester Winter Break plan for every resident, whether or not you stay over the break.
  • The university contradicts itself on fridge size — Fire Safety says 3 cubic feet and 1.5 amps; the What-to-Bring page says 3.5. Buy against the smaller number.
  • Lofting is prohibited — students may not assemble or disassemble beds at any time — and appliance rules split by building: a toaster, George Foreman grill and rice cooker are allowed only in the Village and Hawk Crossings.
  • Webster Hall does not appear in the current 17-hall list — if you find it referenced somewhere, treat it as out of date rather than as an option.

Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.

Per academic year, housing only. The room-rates page still carried a 2025–2026 heading in August 2026 while the meal-plan page had already been updated, so the figures below are the published 2025-26 numbers — treat them as indicative. A meal plan is mandatory and billed separately for every resident, including apartment residents, who must hold at least the Apartment Flex Plan at $285 a semester. Every resident also owes a mandatory $305-per-semester Winter Break Meal Plan on top.

Fridge & microwave rules

Bring your own; nothing is supplied in the traditional halls. One microwave per room, capped at 700 watts in traditional and suite halls and 1,000 watts in apartments. One fridge per room — and here the university disagrees with itself, with Fire Safety specifying 3 cubic feet and 1.5 amps while the What-to-Bring page says 3.5 cubic feet. Fire Safety is the safer number to buy against. The apartments already have a full-size fridge.

What you cannot bring

Extension cords (GFCI or surge power strips only, never daisy-chained); neon signs, halogen bulbs, lava lamps and multi-head octopus lamps; air fryers, toasters, Instant Pots, hot plates, rice cookers, electric skillets, deep fryers and waffle makers in traditional halls — a toaster, George Foreman grill and rice cooker are permitted only in the Village and Hawk Crossings; candles, incense and wax warmers even as decoration; hookahs, hoverboards, surveillance devices, space heaters and weapons. Window and portable air conditioners are prohibited university-wide. Lofting is prohibited and students may not assemble or disassemble beds at any time. On bed risers the university contradicts itself — the general list bans them outright while a dedicated Facilities notice bans only risers with built-in USB or multi-plug outlets; the specific notice is the better guide. Fish tanks up to 5 gallons. UL-listed LED strips are allowed.

Who has to live on campus

None found. Housing is described as guaranteed for students who meet the application deadlines, never as required — consistent with a commuter-heavy campus. That makes the off-campus decision here purely financial, and the arithmetic often favours staying: an on-campus double works out around $395 to $545 a month over nine months, while the cheapest whole unit in the surrounding towns starts near $1,645.
