Before you buy anything: what is actually true at University of South Carolina
A generic college checklist will cost you money here. These are University of South Carolina’s own published room measurements and rules — check them before you order.
Room size and rugs
Rooms measure about 71 sq ft (Tools & Resources). At the small end a 4×6 rug is the largest that leaves walking room — measure before ordering anything bigger.
Bed and bedding
Extra-long twin (Twin XL), and it appears uniform across the traditional, suite and pod halls. USC’s hall pages state “Bed Size: 80" (extra long twin)”, and Campus Village lists a 38" x 85" Twin XL mattress. Frame dimensions vary slightly by hall — Bates is 38" x 85", South Tower 38" x 82" — but tha Measure before buying bedding — this campus is not a standard 38×80.
Fridge and microwave
USC bans personal mini-fridges entirely — “mini fridges are not allowed in any residence hall.” Students rent or buy the university MicroFridge combo instead: $248.39 a year to rent, $604.79 to purchase. McBryde and Bates House already have MicroFridges in each room, so residents there buy and rent Do not buy a fridge for this campus.
Already in your room
Do not pack duplicates of these: Rooms are furnished with a bed, dresser, closet or wardrobe and a desk with chair per resident; South Tower additionally provides lofted beds and a wardrobe. Wi-Fi and two wired connections are provided, though a separate Technology Network Fee of $76 is billed on top of the room
Leave these at home
Extension cords and multiple socket plugs are prohibited due to electrical circuitry limits and fire safety regulations — surge protectors only, with a circuit breaker, on/off switch and reset button, one per socket, never chained. Halogen lamps are prohibited, as are other lamps
