Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- Do not buy bed risers or a loft kit. Belmont prohibits both risers and student-installed loft systems, bans cinder blocks campus-wide, and provides lofting kits.
- The microwave rule has a floor, not just a ceiling — “microwaves (between 700–800 watts) are allowed.” A 600-watt compact microwave, a common budget buy, may not qualify.
- LED strip and string lights are flatly banned, including adhesive strips and rope or tube lights — and foam-backed adhesive strips are not permitted on painted sheetrock, so standard Command-type strips are out on painted walls.
- Hewlett Hall and Benz Hall publish only “Studio Loft Bed” with no mattress size — the one unresolved linen risk at Belmont. Confirm with Residence Life before buying.
- You may not bring your own mattress under Tennessee fire code, though toppers and egg crates are allowed.
- Apartment residents with full kitchens are still required to carry a meal plan — stated explicitly for Hewlett and Benz.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.
| Hall | Style | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Hail / Heron / Maddox / Pembroke / Wright The cheapest tier. Pembroke and Wright use community baths, and Maddox and Wright have floor kitchenettes with a full-size fridge and microwave. | Traditional & historic suite | $3,910/sem |
| Kennedy / Patton / Bear House / Potter / Russell Suites / Thrailkill The standard freshman suite tier — a bath shared between two rooms, with wardrobes included. | Suite | $4,400/sem |
| Betty Wiseman A premium freshman option with individual heat and AC control and hard floors rather than carpet. | Premium suite | $4,800/sem |
| Belmont Commons The cheapest full-apartment option; laundry is in the Commons Clubhouse rather than in-unit. | Apartment | $5,985/sem |
| The Hillside The only option verified with both a dishwasher and an in-unit washer and dryer. | Apartment | $6,150/sem 4-bedroom |
| Kenect The most expensive listing on Belmont’s cost estimator — roughly 2.6 times the cheapest hall. Note it also appears on Belmont’s off-campus listings, so its on-campus status is ambiguous. | Apartment | $10,000/sem 1-bedroom |
Rates are per person per semester — double them for an annual figure. The meal plan is separate and mandatory: freshmen are assigned an Anytime plan at $3,390 a semester, upperclass residents a Block 150 at $2,400. On top of housing and food sit mandatory student fees of $1,115 a semester and health insurance at $1,795 a semester, required for all full-time students. A realistic cheapest-hall freshman year before tuition is therefore about $16,830. Rates compiled from the university’s published housing rates, August 2026. Always confirm on the official rates page.
Who has to live on campus
All full-time undergraduates and incoming full-time transfers with fewer than 60 credit hours by the start of the fall semester must live on campus. Exemptions: being 21 or over by 19 August 2026; being married or having children residing with you; or living with parents, legal guardians, grandparents, or siblings over the age of 25. ⚠ Belmont contradicts itself — the Housing Requirement web page lists transfer students as a fourth exemption category, while the 2026-27 agreement explicitly includes incoming transfers under 60 hours in the requirement.
What the room already includes
Standard rooms have two Twin XL beds with lofting capabilities, two dressers, two desks and two chairs, plus wardrobes in Kennedy, Maddox, Patton/Bear House, Potter, Thrailkill and Wiseman. The rate is inclusive: laundry, utilities, cable and internet are all included, and laundry needs no quarters. Most bathrooms are suite-style shared by two rooms, with Pembroke and Wright on community baths. Apartment-style housing — Belmont Commons, The Hillside, Dickens, Horrell, Russell Apartments, Benz and the larger Hewlett units — comes with a full-size refrigerator, four-burner stove and oven, sink, microwave and a furnished living room, and The Hillside adds a dishwasher and in-unit washer and dryer. Note the exception: Hewlett’s one-bedrooms and studios have only a kitchenette with a small refrigerator.
Fridge & microwave rules
Bring your own — Belmont does not provide appliance rental. The fridge cap is stated two ways: “less than 4 cubic feet and 1.8 amps” with Energy Star qualification required on the packing materials, and “4.0 cubic feet” in the Handbook — buy under 4.0 to be safe. Microwaves are 800 watts or less on the packing list, but the Handbook words it as “between 700–800 watts,” implying a floor as well as a ceiling. Full-size refrigerators are prohibited. Unnecessary in all apartment-style units, and in Maddox and Wright, which have a floor kitchenette with a microwave, sink and full-size refrigerator.
What you cannot bring
Coffee makers with an exposed heating element or warming plate, toasters, toaster ovens, convection ovens, electric skillets, waffle or crepe pans, hot plates, hamburger makers, space heaters, electric blankets, Easy Bake Ovens, and — named explicitly — Instant Pots, pressure cookers and air fryers. Full-size refrigerators and open coil appliances are banned. Extension cords: two-prong cords, multiple plugs and plug converters are prohibited; three-prong cords no longer than 12 feet are approved. Decorative LED rope, tube and string lights are prohibited, as are adhesive LED light strips, halogen lamps, lava lamps and any light producing excessive heat — and overhead or room lights may not be covered. Candles with or without a wick, incense and any open flame are banned. Painting is prohibited, wallpaper strongly discouraged, and foam-backed adhesive strips are not permitted on painted sheetrock walls. Loft systems, bed risers and cinder blocks are all prohibited, and students may not bring their own mattress under Tennessee fire code, though toppers are allowed. Pets: fish in 10-gallon or smaller tanks only. Also banned: barbecue grills, fireworks, weapons including toy guns, weightlifting equipment beyond hand weights under 25 lbs, and cold plunge pools.
