What on-campus housing costs at Memphis
Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- Memphis publishes no mattress dimensions anywhere. The only description we could find on any university page is the phrase “extra-long twin” — and that comes from a 2021 what-to-bring PDF, because the current 2025 version is an image-only scan with no readable text. Centennial Place publishes room footprints and closet sizes but not the bed. Treat 38″ x 80″ as an assumption, not a fact, and ring 901-678-2295 before you buy sheets.
- The meal plan is genuinely optional — no mandatory dining purchase for hall residents, just an automatic $350 a semester of Tiger Eat$. Almost no comparable public university does this.
- There is no live-on requirement either, except for students on designated scholarships or in Living Learning Communities.
- Extension cords are explicitly allowed if UL-approved and used with a surge protector — the opposite of nearly every other school in this guide, most of which ban them outright.
- Ceiling fans are banned, not merely personal air conditioners. That is an odd and easily missed rule on a campus in one of the hottest cities in the country.
- The only cooking appliances permitted are a microwave and a coffee maker with a fully enclosed element. Toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, grills and deep fryers are all out. Bring your own fridge up to 4.4 cubic feet and 1.5 amps, and a microwave up to 800 watts and 5 amps — though those figures also come from the 2021 document.
- A cached rate sheet on the university’s own site contradicts the live rates page — it shows the Living Learning Complex at $2,930 against $3,359, and Centennial Place at $3,010 against $3,454. We have used the live page throughout.

Fridge & microwave rules
Everything is bring-your-own — nothing is supplied, and nothing is banned on the grounds that something is supplied. The published limits are a fridge of 4.4 cubic feet drawing no more than 1.5 amps and a microwave of 800 watts and 5 amps, both at 120 volts. Note those numbers come from the 2021 what-to-bring PDF, because the 2025 replacement is a scanned image with no readable text — so confirm them before buying. There is no MicroFridge rental programme. Centennial Place pods share a community kitchenette with a stove, oven, microwave and ice machine.
What you cannot bring
Firearms of every kind including pellet, BB and air guns, plus ammunition and explosives. Any heat-producing cooking appliance other than a microwave and an enclosed-element coffee maker — so toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills and deep fryers are all prohibited. Candles, incense and potpourri burners. Halogen lamps. Personal air conditioners. Ceiling fans. Waterbeds and other water furniture. Weight-lifting equipment. Vehicles with internal combustion engines. Compressed gas cylinders. Large fabric items such as flags, parachutes and netting. Pets other than fish in tanks of 20 gallons or less. Extension cords are permitted if UL-approved and used with a surge protector, and bed risers do not appear on any prohibited list. LED strips, tapestries and lofting are not addressed at all.
Who has to live on campus
None, except for students holding designated scholarships or enrolled in Living Learning Community programmes. The university’s own wording is that students “are not required to live in the residence halls, with the exception of designated scholarships and programs”. The only penalty language in the housing policy concerns withdrawal — a student who stops being enrolled must vacate within 24 hours.
