What UTRGV housing actually costs
Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- UTRGV publishes no mattress dimensions anywhere — not on the What to Bring page, the Living Options page, the FAQ, the contract, or the archived handbook. The What to Bring page actively declines to specify: "mattress size is based on the unit type you have been assigned," while telling students to bring sheets.
- Troxel Hall has a room type with a FULL bed — the "Designed Single (full bed)" at $3,375 a semester. It is disclosed only inside a rate-table row; the Troxel hall page still says "XL Single beds." The two official pages contradict each other.
- UTRGV uses two different bed labels and never reconciles them — "XL Single" in Heritage, Troxel and The Village; "XL Twin" in Unity and Casa Bella. Almost certainly the same thing, but the university never says so.
- Personal microwaves are banned in Heritage and Troxel but supplied in every Unity Hall room, alongside a mini-fridge. Opposite rules in buildings on the same campus.
- "No wireless routers" is on the current prohibited list — students cannot set up personal Wi-Fi. Air fryers are named explicitly, and the archived handbook also bans blenders and rice cookers.
- The fridge cap is 3.1 cubic feet — unusually small, and it appears only in an archived 2023-24 handbook. A student reading only the current pages would never learn it exists.
- Water guns and "look alike" gadgets are banned alongside real firearms, and gambling is named in the housing contract.
- Fall below 12 credit hours and you are both exempt from the live-on rule and liable to be removed from housing — the same fact cuts both ways in two different UTRGV documents.
Buying the standard college checklist here is a guess — UTRGV will not tell you what size the bed is, so measure it on move-in day before you buy sheets.

Fridge & microwave rules
The rules invert between buildings. Unity Hall supplies a microwave and mini-fridge in every room. Heritage and Troxel allow a personal refrigerator but prohibit personal microwaves — there is a shared microwave in the lobby kitchenette only. The Village and Casa Bella have full kitchens. The published refrigerator cap is 3.1 cubic feet, notably smaller than the 4.0 to 4.6 cu ft typical at peer Texas schools — but it appears only in an archived 2023-24 handbook, and the current What to Bring page lists a mini-fridge as "optional" with no limits at all. No microwave wattage cap is published. All appliances need a UL Listed tag.
What you cannot bring
Animals other than fish in a 10-gallon maximum tank; open coil heating or cooking devices, including induction cooktops, air fryers and Foreman grills; candles and incense; guns, fireworks, paintball markers, crossbows, bows and arrows, and water guns or look-alike gadgets; wireless routers; extension cords or multi-plug adapters without surge protectors; hoverboards; and halogen bulbs. The archived handbook adds blenders, rice cookers, crock pots, toasters, toaster ovens, hot plates, electric skillets, griddles, woks and deep fryers, plus neon lights. The housing contract also names gambling. The wireless-router ban is the one worth knowing before you arrive.
Who has to live on campus
It exists, but a local-residence exemption swallows most of it. All first-year students who graduated high school within the preceding 24 months must live on campus — unless a parent or guardian's primary residence is in Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr or Willacy County, which is the entire Rio Grande Valley. Other exemptions: married or with dependent children, extreme medical condition, extreme financial hardship, age 20 or older on the first day of classes, 30-plus completed hours excluding dual-enrolment and AP, or enrolment in fewer than 12 credit hours. Deadlines are July 1 for fall and November 1 for spring. The penalty is a hold on your records and a block on registering for future classes. Note the paradox: fewer than 12 hours is both an exemption from the rule and grounds for removal if you already live on campus.
Rates and rules from UTRGV housing rates and payments, compiled August 2026. UTRGV publishes no mattress dimensions on any page, and the current Resident Handbook is hosted off-site on Canva. The Troxel hall page says "XL Single beds" while the rate table lists a Designed Single with a full bed. Call (956) 665-3439 in Edinburg or (956) 882-7191 in Brownsville, or email home@utrgv.edu.
