What Western Washington housing actually costs

Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules

  • No air conditioning anywhere, and personal units are explicitly prohibited — space heaters are banned too, along with halogen bulbs over 300 watts.
  • The personal fridge cap is 2.5 cubic feet — unusually small — smaller than most of the mini-fridges sold as dorm fridges. Microwaves and air fryers are capped at 900 watts.
  • Birnam Wood, the apartment-style option, is Twin XL too — not Full — the opposite of what most universities do with apartments. No numeric mattress dimensions are published for any building.
  • Homemade bed risers and props are banned by name — wood, brick and cement blocks specifically. Non-university beds, mattresses and waterbeds are banned as well.
  • Meal-plan prices are not published anywhere — a plan is mandatory for all hall residents and separate from the room rate, but WWU gives no dollar figure on any page.
  • Leaving a contract early is expensive — $15 a day for halls or $10 for apartments for the remainder of the year, plus a $250 prepayment forfeit and a $200 to $400 cancellation fee.

Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.

Per quarter — and the quarters are not priced equally. Fall costs materially more than Spring, so a budget built on a three-way average will be wrong twice. The rate covers room and utilities only; a meal plan is a separate mandatory purchase for all hall residents, and WWU does not publish its price on any page. Birnam Wood residents are exempt from the meal plan.

Fridge & microwave rules

Bring your own in the halls; Birnam Wood has a full-size fridge and a stove. The personal mini-fridge cap is 2.5 cubic feet, which is smaller than most units marketed as dorm fridges — measure before you buy. Microwaves and air fryers are capped at 900 watts, and halogen bulbs over 300 watts are banned. No MicroFridge rental programme was found either way.

What you cannot bring

Candles, incense and open flame; real cut evergreens; non-university beds, mattresses and waterbeds; homemade bed risers or props including wood, brick and cement blocks; fuels; air conditioners; space heaters; halogen bulbs over 300 watts. Lofting is described as a standard adjustable configuration rather than a prohibited one. Extension cords, LED strips, tapestries, toasters, Instant Pots and pets are not itemised anywhere — genuinely not published.

Who has to live on campus

None — and the 2026-27 agreement says so outright: regardless of age or class standing, the student is not required by the university to reside on campus. What constrains the decision here is the market rather than the rules. Bellingham’s rental vacancy sits around 2.5 to 3 percent against a 5 to 7 percent healthy benchmark, and several student properties showed no availability at all for 2026-27, so an off-campus plan needs to start early.

Rates and rules from WWU room and board rates, compiled August 2026. An initial reading of that page suggested meal plans were bundled; the itemised quarterly figures sum cleanly to the room-only annual total, so they are billed separately. Call 360-650-6565 or email housing@wwu.edu.
