Room dimensions are only half the story — here is what UC Riverside actually charges to live on campus, what shows up in the room before you unpack, and the appliance rules that decide what you can bring.
Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- Do not buy a mini-fridge. UCR already puts a university microwave and mini-fridge in every residence hall room, and it must stay there.
- Supplemental personal refrigerators are banned outright — bringing a second one is a policy violation, not just a waste of money.
- Campus apartments have a full kitchen fridge instead, so a mini-fridge is redundant there too.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.
Bed size: Twin XL (extra-long twin, about 36x80) — UCR lists every residence hall bed as an extra-long twin.

Who has to live on campusNo live-on requirement — UCR does not require any class year to live on campus, but single first-year freshmen who meet Housing deadlines are guaranteed a space. About 75% of freshmen and 30% of all students live on campus. Note these rates bundle a required dining plan, so they are not directly comparable to room-only rents.
What's already in the roomExtra-long twin bed, desk, chair, closet space and window coverings, PLUS a university-issued microwave and mini-fridge already in the room. Utilities and Wi-Fi included, and every residence hall contract bundles a required dining plan.
Fridge & microwave rulesPROVIDED — a university microwave and mini-fridge unit is already in every residence hall room and must stay there. Students may NOT add a personal supplemental refrigerator, so do not buy one. Campus apartments have a full-size kitchen fridge instead.
Leave these at homeTorchiere halogen lamps, candles, open-element appliances (hot plates, toasters, toaster ovens, grills, immersion coils), supplemental personal refrigerators, personal furniture, weapons, cannabis, and all pets except fish in a 20-gallon-or-less tank. Space heaters must be UL-approved with tip-over shutoff.
