What on-campus housing costs at CU Boulder

Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules

  • Bear Creek, Weber and Code Talker put FULL-size beds in their single rooms — the 4-bed/2-bath doubles in the same buildings are Twin XL. Every checklist says buy Twin XL; for a single room in those three buildings that advice is simply wrong.
  • Do not buy a mini-fridge or microwave. Both come in every room, and additional units are explicitly banned. The apartment halls additionally have full kitchens with a real fridge, stove and dishwasher.
  • Tapestries are capped at 3 feet by 3 feet — smaller than nearly every tapestry sold as dorm decor, which typically run 51" x 60" or larger.
  • You cannot replace the curtains. The hall draperies meet fire-safety standards and may not be removed, so any curtain purchase is wasted money.
  • Lofting is banned unless CU supplies it, which rules out bed risers and loft kits — but under-bed clearance is already 31.5 inches, unusually generous. Measure to that number rather than buying risers.
  • Air fryers, pressure cookers and George Foreman grills are named by category and brand in the ban list — no ambiguity, unlike most schools’ vaguer wording. Laundry is included at no per-load cost.

Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.

Bed size: Not uniform. The residence hall furniture specification lists the mattress as 38" x 80" — a true standard Twin XL — and hall pages confirm “XL twin mattress.” But the apartment-style buildings put FULL-size beds in single rooms: Bear Creek, Weber Hall and Code Talker Hall all publish a full-size bed in singles and “XL twin in 4 bed/2 bath double.” Confirm your room type before buying.

Rates are per semester — double for the year — and residence hall rates include food, unlike most schools. Note the page still carries a caveat that rates “are not final until approved by the Board of Regents in June and are subject to change.” Apartment-style rates are room-only and break the pattern, so comparing a Bear Creek rate to a residence hall rate is apples to oranges. Living Learning Communities and Residential Academic Programs carry an additional fee on top of the room rate. Rates compiled from the university’s published housing rates, August 2026. Always confirm on the official rates page.

Who has to live on campus

CU Boulder requires all students admitted as first-year freshmen to live in a residence hall and carry a traditional meal plan for two academic-year semesters — the requirement is a package, not just housing. Published exemptions are narrow: married students, students living with a parent or legal guardian and commuting from home, and students aged 21 or older; anything else is considered on its own merit. Petitions should be filed with the Office of Occupancy Management before applying for housing.

What the room already includes

Per resident: a bed and mattress, a dresser with at least two drawers, a desk and chair, a wardrobe or closet, a lockable desk drawer, and trash and recycle cans. Per room: a Microfridge and a microwave. Under-bed clearance is 31.5 inches. Rates include both housing and food, and laundry is included as an amenity with no per-load price. Rooms run 60 to 100 square feet per student. The apartment-style buildings — Bear Creek, Weber and Code Talker — have full kitchens with a refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave, sofa, coffee table and dining table, with the explicit note that kitchen supplies are not provided. Baker Hall uses an evaporative cooling system rather than true air conditioning.

Fridge & microwave rules

Provided — a Microfridge AND a microwave come in every residence hall room. Do not buy either. Bear Creek even lists a free Microfridge per unit on top of the apartment’s full-size refrigerator and microwave. Additional refrigerators and personal microwave ovens are explicitly banned, so no cubic-foot or wattage cap is published — you simply cannot add one. The apartment halls have full kitchens, making any extra appliance both unnecessary and prohibited.

What you cannot bring

The ban list is unusually direct: toasters, toaster ovens, pressure cookers, air fryers, hot plates, electric griddles, personal microwave ovens, barbecues, grills of any kind including George Foreman-style, and additional refrigerators. Halogen lamps are prohibited for the heat they emit, and space heaters require written approval from Housing and the Campus Fire Marshal. Extension cords are strongly discouraged as a fire cause, with a multi-plug circuit breaker outlet recommended instead. Candles and burning incense are not allowed. Adhesive LED light strips are discouraged because removing them commonly strips paint, and residents are billed for the damage. Tapestries, wall hangings and flags larger than 3 feet by 3 feet are considered fire hazards and are not allowed, and flammable items may not be hung from walls or ceilings at all. The hall draperies meet fire-safety standards and may not be removed. Lofting is not permitted unless provided by CU. Pets: none, except a single 10-gallon aquarium for fish or turtles with roommate consent.
