What on-campus housing costs at Miami

Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules

  • Full and Full XL beds on a campus that is otherwise Twin XL. University Village is Full across every unit type. Lakeside Village studios and one-bedrooms are Full XL — a rare, hard-to-find sheet size. Buying a Twin XL bundle for either is a guaranteed return trip.
  • The MicroFridge rental program no longer exists — Miami ended its BedLoft partnership. And the fridge limit is written in amps and watts (1.5 amps / 175 watts) rather than cubic feet, so you cannot shop by the usual “4.5 cu ft” spec.
  • Air fryers and induction burners are named as banned heating devices, along with hot plates and George Foreman-style grills.
  • Extension cords are banned outright, and the permitted surge protector is spec’d down to a 6-foot cord and 6 outlets.
  • Lofting is no longer permitted at all, and bed risers may not lift the bed above 24 inches.
  • Curtains must be fire retardant with a sewn-in NFPA 701 label. No cable TV is provided — bring a smart TV or streaming device. Laundry is free everywhere, including in-unit apartment machines.

Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.

Bed size: Not uniform — Miami tells students to check bed sizes by residential area. Eaton and Centennial Village (Biscayne, Coral, Grove, Ibis, Vista) are Twin XL. University Village is FULL in all unit types. Lakeside Village is mixed within one complex: Twin XL in doubles and most singles, but studios are Twin XL or Full XL and one-bedrooms are Full XL.

Rates are room-only and published both per semester and per academic year. A meal plan is mandatory and billed separately, varying by building: all first-years including Lakeside need the 7 Day All Access; upperclass residents of Biscayne, Coral, Eaton, Grove, Ibis or Vista choose among three plans; upperclass Lakeside Suites residents need only $250 in Dining Dollars; and University Village has no meal plan requirement — so the real gap between Eaton and University Village is much smaller than the room rates suggest. Rates compiled from the university’s published housing rates, August 2026. Always confirm on the official rates page.

Who has to live on campus

“All non-local first-year students are required to live in University housing for two academic semesters, as long as space is available.” The exemption covers first-years living with parents or legal guardians in Miami-Dade or Broward counties, through a formal Live-On Requirement Exemption Request. Spring-admitted students are neither required nor guaranteed housing.

What the room already includes

Every room is air conditioned and equipped with a bed, dresser, desk, chair, trash can, recycling container and window coverings; Eaton adds a desk hutch and closet. Laundry is free everywhere, including in-unit apartment machines. Campus Wi-Fi runs throughout, but cable TV is not provided — students bring smart TVs or streaming devices. University Village units have full kitchens plus free in-unit washers and dryers; Lakeside apartments have full kitchens and its suites have kitchenettes.

Fridge & microwave rules

Bring your own — the rental program is gone. Miami ended its BedLoft partnership including the MicroFridge program. The limit is written in amps and watts, not cubic feet: no more than 1.5 amps and 175 watts. Microwaves are recommended at no more than 900 watts. Do not buy either for Lakeside Village — a refrigerator and microwave are supplied in every unit type — and University Village’s full kitchens make both unnecessary.

What you cannot bring

“All other heating devices, including air fryers, hot plates, induction burners, etc. are considered a fire hazard and may not be used in any residential area.” Also banned: items with an open heating element such as George Foreman grills, candles and incense, plug-in candle warmers, hookahs, outdoor grills, weapons, alcohol, lava lamps and halogen bulbs, and personal electric vehicles including e-scooters, e-bikes and hoverboards. Extension cords are prohibited — the only permitted surge protector is 120-volt, UL approved, with a built-in manual reset, a 15-amp breaker, a maximum 6-foot cord and at most 6 outlets. Students may not paint, build lofts, or hang flags from ceilings or walls, and nothing may be placed in, on, behind or in front of windows. Curtains must be fire retardant with a sewn-in NFPA 701 label, and curtains used as partitions are prohibited. Lofting is no longer permitted; risers may not raise the bed above 24 inches. Pets: fish in a 10-gallon tank or less.
