What Grand Valley State housing actually costs

Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules

  • GVSU never publishes a bed measurement — it asserts that every on-campus bed is a twin XL but gives no inches, for any building. Beds also arrive pre-lofted in most first-year centres and half-lofted at Holton-Hooker, so under-bed clearance is not yours to choose.
  • No air conditioning in any North Campus traditional or suite hall, and personal units are banned — the GVA and Laker Village efficiencies have none either. AC exists in South Apartments, Laker Village, Niemeyer, Murray, VanSteeland, Holton-Hooker, Winter Hall and Secchia.
  • Air fryers, toasters, rice cookers, slow cookers, pressure cookers, waffle irons and toaster ovens are apartment-only — all banned in traditional, cluster and suite rooms, along with deep fryers and dishwashers everywhere.
  • Personal wireless routers and 3D printers are both banned — so are hoverboards, electric blankets, halogen bulbs, strobe and black lights, lava lamps, fog machines, waterbeds and non-university mattresses.
  • Breaking the first-year live-on rule costs a full room-and-board charge — GVSU warns explicitly against signing an off-campus lease before an exemption is approved.

Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.

Per person, per semester. GVSU quotes two numbers for the same room and they are easy to confuse: the knowledge-base page shows the room plus a bundled $2,275 meal plan, while the Board policy shows the room alone. They reconcile exactly — $5,425 minus $2,275 is $3,150. Apartment-style units are not meal-bundled, so only one figure exists for those. Parking runs about $428 a year on top.

Fridge & microwave rules

One microwave per room, up to 1,000 watts, and one mini-fridge up to 4.6 cubic feet — but only in traditional, cluster and suite rooms. Apartment-style units come with a kitchen, so no personal fridge is needed. There is no mandatory rental programme, so bring your own.

What you cannot bring

Candles, incense, charcoal grills, electric blankets and fireplaces, halogen bulbs, space heaters, 3D printers, hoverboards, personal wireless routers, strobe and black lights, lava lamps, fog machines, weapons, deep fryers, dishwashers, natural cut trees, non-university mattresses, waterbeds, trampolines and tanning beds. Air fryers, pressure cookers, waffle irons, toaster ovens, toasters, slow cookers and rice cookers are permitted only in apartment-style units. Kitchen knives over three inches are apartment-only too. String and LED lights are allowed if UL-certified, two strands maximum per outlet, 25 feet, switched off when unattended. Gas grills are Laker Village only and must be stored outdoors. Fish tanks up to 10 gallons. Bicycles must be registered with campus police. Personal air conditioners are banned system-wide.

Who has to live on campus

All first-year students must live on campus regardless of dual-enrolment credits. Exemptions cover students more than two years past high school, those with custody of minor children, married students, students commuting from a parent or guardian home, veterans, and case-by-case appeals. The penalty is a per-semester fee equal to a traditional room plus a base meal plan — effectively paying for housing you are not using. GVSU tells students not to sign a lease until an exemption is approved.
