What on-campus housing costs at Wayne State
Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- Wayne State publishes exact mattress dimensions — and no two halls match. This is the clearest example on the whole site of why you should never buy bedding before you know your building.
- Ghafari and Atchison: 35″ x 81″. Narrower than standard and an inch longer.
- Towers: 35.5″ x 85″. Five inches longer than a Twin XL — standard XL sheets will not reach.
- Chatsworth: 34″ x 74″. Narrower and shorter than even a plain twin, which is 75 inches. It is a converted historic apartment building and the beds show it. Nothing sold as dorm bedding fits this properly.
- Anthony Wayne Drive apartments use a Full, 54″ x 75″. Thompson Suites is not published at all — ring 313-577-2116.
- The campus shuttles were abolished. In their place every student gets free DART passes covering DDOT and SMART buses and the QLINE streetcar, plus free MoGo bikeshare. If you were expecting a campus bus loop, there is not one.
- There is no live-on requirement, and Wayne State never says whether a fridge is already in your room — only that a personal one may not exceed 5 cubic feet or 45 inches tall. Personal air conditioners are banned except units supplied by Housing Facilities, and whether the halls have central air is not published either.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.

Fridge & microwave rules
The Anthony Wayne Drive apartments have full kitchens — dishwasher, microwave, fridge and stove. For the residence halls, Wayne State caps a personal fridge at 5 cubic feet and 45 inches tall and bans chest freezers outright, but nowhere does it say whether a fridge is already provided. That gap is worth a phone call before you buy one, because you could easily arrive with a duplicate or with nothing. No MicroFridge rental programme was found.
What you cannot bring
A long list: air fryers, toasters, toaster ovens, Instant Pots, hot plates, electric skillets, griddles and woks, George Foreman grills, Crock-Pots and deep fryers. Candles, oil lamps, incense, space heaters, heat lamps, halogen lamps and electric blankets. Personal lofts and any self-built bed modification. Waterbeds. Fridges over 5 cubic feet and all chest freezers. Personal wireless routers and wireless printers. Wall-mounted TVs. Subwoofers. Hoverboards and e-scooters. Fog machines. Pets are limited to non-carnivorous fish in a tank of 10 gallons or less. Personal air conditioners are banned unless supplied by Housing Facilities. Bed risers and tapestries are not addressed either way.
Who has to live on campus
None. We checked the obligations, live and apply pages and found no requirement anywhere, which fits a heavily commuter urban campus. Signing a housing contract still binds you to the academic year, but nothing compels any year group to sign one in the first place.
