What on-campus housing costs at Minnesota
Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- Keeler Apartments use standard full-size beds. Every other hall, plus Wilkins and Yudof, is an 80-inch extra-long twin. Buy Twin XL for a Keeler assignment and none of it fits.
- Minnesota never publishes a mattress width. Its pages say 80 inches long and “Twin XL sheets” and stop there. If the exact width matters to you, call 612-624-2994 — do not assume the 38 inches most sheet packaging quotes.
- There is no live-on requirement at all. Unusual for a flagship: about 80% of first-years choose campus housing, but nobody is required to. (Do not confuse this with UMN Rochester, which does have one.)
- Air fryers, toasters, Instant Pots, rice cookers and slow cookers are banned in every standard room. They are only legal in the shared kitchens of Keeler, Wilkins and Yudof. This is the most common care-package mistake here.
- Personal WiFi routers are banned, and so are personal air conditioners and space heaters.
- Loft the bed and you must deloft it — a $100 charge applies if it is left lofted at move-out.
- Sanford Hall does not list air conditioning while Pioneer and Comstock do. Minnesota never says Sanford has none, it simply omits it. Ask before you rely on it.

Fridge & microwave rules
Bring your own — nothing is supplied in the halls. One microwave of 700 watts or less and one fridge of 4.3 cubic feet or less, per room. Personal fridges are genuinely allowed here; there is no MicroFridge rental monopoly like at many peer schools. Keeler, Yudof and Wilkins already have full-size fridges, and microwaves are pre-installed in Keeler, Yudof and Wilkins efficiencies.
What you cannot bring
Toasters, air fryers, hot plates, rice cookers, waffle irons, slow cookers and pressure cookers in any standard room. Halogen, torchiere, neon, black-light, strobe and lava lamps; any fixture over 75 watts. Candles, incense and open flame. Personal WiFi routers. Air conditioners and space heaters. Hoverboards, e-bikes and e-scooters. Door decoration is capped at 30% of the door. Pets are limited to fish in a tank of 10 gallons or less. LED strips are not banned outright, but the adhesive has to be the damage-free kind.
Who has to live on campus
Nobody has to. Minnesota publishes no live-on requirement for the Twin Cities campus — roughly 80% of first-years choose it. That is genuinely unusual for a school this size, and it means the off-campus market below is competing for first-years too, not just upperclassmen.
