What on-campus housing costs at NC State

Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules

  • Do not buy a mini-fridge or a microwave. NC State supplies a one-plug MicroFridge combo in every hall room, folded into the rate, and personal units are banned outright — the packing list lists “Personal mini-fridge” under do-not-bring.
  • There are three different bed sizes. Halls are Twin XL but stated as 36" wide, not 38". All on-campus apartments use FULL mattresses — Wolf Village at 75" length, Wolf Ridge at 80" (Full XL) — so the two apartment communities need different full sheets.
  • University Towers floor-8 “Design Single” rooms use Full 54" x 80", and rooms X02, X28, X47, X48 and X66 have a short twin (38" x 75").
  • Extension cords, halogen lamps of any style, lava lamps and ceiling fans are banned. Surge-protected power strips are the workaround. LED string lights ARE allowed with conditions — the opposite of most schools.
  • Toasters and air fryers are banned in the residence halls but fine in apartment kitchens. NC State’s own two pages disagree on air fryers, so check with Housing.
  • Lofting is not universal — North Hall, some Avent Ferry rooms and University Towers do not allow it, so risers and loft kits are wasted money there.
  • Internet is a separate fee of about $150 a semester, but laundry is free — no quarters needed.

Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.

Bed size: Three sizes. Residence halls are extra-long twin but stated as 36" x 80" — note the 36" width, not the usual 38". All on-campus apartments use full mattresses: Wolf Village at 53" x 75" and Wolf Ridge at 80" length (full XL). University Towers floor-8 Design Singles are full 54" x 80", and rooms X02, X28, X47, X48 and X66 have a short twin.

NC State does not price by building — rates are set by room type campus-wide, so a double in the oldest hall costs the same as one in the newest. Figures are 2026-27 projected, per person per semester. No meal plan is bundled, but the ResNet internet fee is extra. Rates compiled from the university’s published housing rates, August 2026. Always confirm on the official rates page.

Who has to live on campus

All first-year students are required to live in University Housing. Duration follows your entry term — a fall start owes fall and spring. Exemptions are granted only for demonstrated financial hardship, medical or disability needs verified through the Disability Resource Office, religious requirements, or permanent residence with a parent or guardian within 15 miles driving distance of main campus. Already signing an off-campus lease, wanting to live with friends, or family owning nearby property are all explicitly rejected. Appeal deadlines are 1 June, 15 June and 15 November, and decisions are final.

What the room already includes

Per student: a bed frame and mattress, desk, study table, dresser, and a wardrobe or closet — plus a micro-fridge unit. The rate covers air conditioning, all utilities and free laundry. Internet is not included — ResNet is a separate required fee of about $150 a semester. Wolf Village and Wolf Ridge include a full kitchen, furnished bedrooms and furnished living areas; Avent Ferry is hotel-style with private in-suite baths, and its Building F efficiencies swap the micro-fridge for a full refrigerator and microwave.

Fridge & microwave rules

Provided — and personal ones are banned. Every hall room includes a university-supplied one-plug microwave and refrigerator combo at no extra charge. There is no rental to sign up for and no size cap to shop against, because you are not supposed to bring one: the packing list names “Personal mini-fridge” under do-not-bring and Community Standards prohibits refrigerator/freezers. Moot in Wolf Village, Wolf Ridge, E.S. King Village, Western Manor and Avent Ferry Building F.

What you cannot bring

Personal mini-fridges and freezers, heaters, air conditioners, washers, dryers, dishwashers, burners, hot plates, and toasters, air fryers and other open-coil appliances — allowed in apartment kitchens but not the residence halls. Candles, lanterns, incense and Sterno. Extension cords, lava lamps, halogen lamps of any model or style, and ceiling fans. Pets except fish in tanks of 10 gallons or less. Decorations covering more than 75% of wall space, plus wood paneling, room partitions, parachutes and fishnets; nothing may hang from ceilings, lights or pipes. Also banned: dart boards, water beds, hoverboards and handless electric scooters. LED string lights are allowed if third-party certified, used only when the room is occupied and unplugged when you are away.
