Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- The apartments have FULL beds; the residence halls have XL twins. UB’s own packing list splits it explicitly. Creekside Village, Flickinger Court, Flint Village, Hadley Village and South Lake Village are all full-size — buying Twin XL sheets for a UB apartment is wasted money.
- The hall mattress is 35.5" wide, not 38". UB publishes “80" x 35.5"” on three separate hall pages, so standard Twin XL fitted sheets will sit loose.
- Microwaves are banned in the residence halls, period. A MicroFridge combo is the only permitted route — a standalone microwave will be confiscated.
- Extension cords and bed risers are banned in the apartments too, not just the halls — unusual, since apartment-style housing normally relaxes both.
- Tapestries and cloth wall hangings are banned campus-wide, which kills the single most common dorm-decor purchase.
- No air conditioning in the residence halls, and you may not bring a unit. The apartments are air conditioned.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.
| Hall | Style | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Ellicott / Governors / South Campus — Value-Bull Quad Cheapest bed on campus — a discounted high-occupancy room rather than a different building. | Traditional/suite | $7,367/yr |
| Ellicott / Governors / South Campus — Standard Quad A four-person room at standard, non-discounted pricing. | Traditional/suite | $8,664/yr |
| Hadley Village Full kitchen, air conditioning and free laundry — and full-size beds. | Apartment | $10,306/yr 4-bedroom |
| Clement / Goodyear South Campus, near the medical and dental schools; two doubles share a bath. | Suite | $10,376/yr double |
| Greiner Hall Second-year suite hall, described as temperature controlled, with 188 sq ft doubles. | Suite | $11,061/yr double |
| South Lake Village Priciest per-student option — lakeside, full kitchen, air conditioning. | Apartment | $15,064/yr 1-bedroom |
All UB rates are per student, per academic year — do not double them. The 2026-27 figures are published and not marked proposed. A meal plan is not bundled and is billed separately. A $300 housing deposit is collected and applied to charges. “Value-Bull” is a discount tier tied to higher-occupancy rooms, not a separate building. Rates compiled from the university’s published housing rates, August 2026. Always confirm on the official rates page.
Who has to live on campus
Not required — “All students are offered the option of living on-campus at UB.” There is no live-on mandate for any class year, so exemptions do not apply. Housing is not guaranteed either: eligibility depends on completing an application, submitting a deposit, and space being available.
What the room already includes
A desk, chair, dresser, closet or wardrobe and bed per resident. Rates are all-inclusive — “your rates include electricity, internet, laundry and much more,” so laundry is free, no card or coins. Residence halls have no air conditioning (window units are prohibited), though Greiner’s suites are described as temperature controlled. The five apartment complexes are a different product entirely: all utilities and internet, furnished living and dining rooms, a full kitchen with microwave and dishwasher, free on-site laundry and air conditioning.
Fridge & microwave rules
Residence halls are bring-your-own fridge, capped at no larger than 4.5 cubic feet. Microwaves are banned outright in the residence halls — the only legal route is a MicroFridge combination unit, which UB permits as an alternative. No microwave wattage cap is published. In all five apartment complexes a fridge and microwave are already installed, so buying either is wasted money.
What you cannot bring
The residence-hall cooking ban names each item individually: air fryer, crock pot, hot plate, grilling machine, rice cooker, sandwich maker, slow cooker, toaster and microwave oven. Extension cords are banned in both the halls and the apartments — surge protectors only. Bed risers are banned in both as well. Tapestries and cloth wall hangings are banned in both. Also prohibited: air conditioners in the residence halls, candles, incense, hoverboards, oil-burning, halogen, torchiere and multi-head lamps, permanent adhesives and nails, weapons, and flammable liquids. Pets: fish only, in tanks of 10 gallons or less.
