Kent State University Off-Campus Housing Guide (2026)

Downtown Kent rebuilt itself around the university, so the Summit Street and Main Street corridors are genuinely walkable — and PARTA carries you free anywhere in the county with a FLASHcard.

Where students live

East Summit Street runs straight along the campus edge and holds University Townhomes, Paloma and Campus Pointe — this is the main student corridor and where the cheapest confirmed per-bed rent in town sits. Downtown Kent, around South Depeyster and Main, is a genuinely redeveloped centre with 345 Flats a block from campus. Further out, Golden Oaks, Lincoln Street and Morris Road hold the quieter, cheaper options a mile or so from class.

Kent has an unusually clear market: most of the big buildings state per-bed pricing plainly and several are furnished as standard. Two cautions. University Oaks presents the same dollar figures as a whole-unit rent on its own site and as a per-person rent on the listing aggregators — the pattern only makes sense per bed, but confirm it in writing. And Copper Creek appears in listings with a “30+ minutes” distance that looks like a data error rather than a real commute.

Getting to campus without a car

One of the best deals in this guide. PARTA runs five campus routes that are free to everyone, no student ID needed on campus — and the county-wide routes are also free once you show a FLASHcard. Express services cost extra but stay cheap: $1 to Akron, $5 to Cleveland. Kent Central Gateway downtown is the hub for both transit and parking. Campus Pointe even has its own PARTA stop on site.

How it compares to a dorm

A standard double is $4,335 a semester, but with the mandatory Blue meal plan the Bursar puts the real total at $14,360 for the year. A $599 bed at University Townhomes, across the road from campus, is about $7,200 over twelve months with your own kitchen. The catch is that most first and second-years are not allowed to take it.
Different bed, different sheets. Campus is 36 inches wide, so even your dorm sheets were probably a compromise. Off campus the furnished student buildings here are Full and ordinary apartments fit a Queen — nothing carries over either way.

What you’ll need

Most rentals here come furnished — use the checklist’s furnished filter and focus on bedding, kitchen and bath.
