Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- Full-size beds are all over OU. Headington Hall and Traditions Square are full-size in every unit, and Cross Village and the Residential Colleges are split by floor plan. OU refuses to give a campus-wide answer — its own packing list says “BedSheets (See room assignment for sizing).” Wait for your assignment before buying sheets.
- Air fryers, crock pots and toaster ovens are explicitly banned — three of the most commonly gifted dorm appliances. Space heaters, personal AC units, ceiling fans and extension cords are out too; surge protectors only.
- Tapestries and large wall hangings are prohibited — nothing may cover a third or more of a door or wall. Halogen lamps are banned, and even unlit decorative candles must be removed.
- Headington, Cross Village and Traditions Square already include a fridge and microwave. Where you do need one: max 4 cubic feet, fridge 150–350 watts, microwave 500–750 watts and under 3 amps per hour.
- Lofted beds and self-built furniture are banned, so loft kits and storage risers are wasted money.
- Published hall rates bundle a required meal plan, so they are not comparable to off-campus rent.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.
| Hall | Style | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Traditions Square Cheapest on campus; full kitchen with a stove, in-unit full-size washer and dryer, full-size beds, and meal points rather than a bundled plan. | Apartment | $4,680/sem (4-bed suite, 4-person) |
| David L. Boren Hall Cheapest traditional hall; Twin XL, built-in bookshelves, two closets, no in-room fridge or microwave. | Traditional | $6,530/sem standard double |
| Couch Center Classic high-rise suite; semi-private bath that residents clean themselves. Twin XL. | Suite | $7,275/sem (2-bed suite, 4-person) |
| Residential Colleges Dunham and Headington College — Oxford-style with live-in faculty. Doubles are Twin XL but singles and multi-bed suites are full-size. | Suite | $7,340/sem standard double |
| Cross Village In-unit kitchenette with fridge and microwave, common kitchen on every floor, fitness centre and blackbox theatre. Bed size varies by floor plan. | Suite | $7,980/sem (2-bed suite, 4-person) |
| Headington Hall Premium; its own dining hall in the building, sectionals and TV stands. Full-size beds and an apartment-size fridge and microwave already installed. Top of range: Cross Village 1-bed suite at $12,285. | Suite | $9,060/sem (2-bed suite, 4-person) |
Rates are per semester and residence-hall rates bundle a required meal plan — Traditions Square is the exception, issuing meal points instead, which is part of why it is so much cheaper. Rates compiled from the university’s published housing rates, August 2026. Always confirm on the official rates page.
Who has to live on campus
All students under 21 with fewer than 24 credit hours earned after high school — including transfers — must live in freshman-designated University housing for their first year. Exemptions cover married students or those with children, anyone who has already lived on campus two semesters, commuters from a parent or guardian home in Cleveland or McClain County, and approved financial, medical or exceptional need. Violating the policy without an approved exemption carries a $3,000 fine.
What the room already includes
All halls are fully furnished — bed, desk, desk chair, wardrobe and dresser, with Boren adding two closets, a bureau and built-in bookshelves. The rate includes all utilities, free wireless, laundry, study lounges and free tutoring. Traditions Square is a true apartment with a bar, sink, stove, microwave, fridge and a full-size in-unit washer and dryer. Cross Village has an in-unit kitchenette plus a common kitchen on every floor; McCasland and South Hall have only a floor community kitchenette.
Fridge & microwave rules
It depends on the hall. Already provided — do not buy: Headington Hall (microwaves and apartment-size fridges), Cross Village kitchenettes, and Traditions Square’s full kitchen. Bring your own for Couch, Boren, McCasland and South Hall: one fridge and one microwave per unit, each no more than 4 cubic feet, mini-fridge drawing 150–350 watts, microwave 500–750 watts and no more than 3 amps per hour.
What you cannot bring
Air fryers, deep fryers, electric griddles, electric grills, sandwich presses, waffle irons, woks, hot oil popcorn poppers, hot plates, indoor grills and crock pots — and anything without an automatic shut-off. Personal AC units, space heaters, ceiling fans and extension cords. Open flame or flammable liquid, including candle warmers without auto shut-off; even unlit decorative candles must be removed. Halogen lamps and bulbs, incense. Anything covering a third or more of a door or wall, which bans tapestries. Self-constructed furniture including lofted beds. All animals except fish in tanks of 10 gallons or less. Hoverboards, e-scooters and lithium-ion bikes stored indoors.
