Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- Douthit Hills WEST uses full-size beds, not Twin XL — and Douthit Hills East is Twin XL. Same complex, two sizes. It is one of the most requested communities on campus, so this catches a lot of families.
- Standalone microwaves are banned outside the apartments — “the MicroFridge is the ONLY allowed microwave in the non-apartment residence halls.” Either rent the combo unit or go without.
- The refrigerator cap is 3.6 cubic feet — smaller than the 4.3–4.5 cu ft units most retailers sell as “dorm fridges,” so a big-box purchase can be turned away at check-in.
- LED strip lights and extension cords are both banned, along with candles, wax warmers and halogen lamps.
- Curtains must be fire resistant and hung on a tension rod — no drilling or nailing. That rules out most generic dorm curtain sets. Mirrors are not provided either.
- Bring a TV with an HDMI input, not coax — hall pages specify “IPTV (No Coaxial Connection).”
- Laundry is free campus-wide, so no quarters or laundry card — though detergent should be HE-compatible.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.
| Hall | Style | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Barnett Hall (The Quad) Cheapest bed on campus; hall-style baths at the floor ends, full kitchen and laundry on the lower level. Double $3,690, designated single $4,440. | Traditional | $3,358/sem triple |
| Geer, Sanders, Young, Cope, Benet The “Shoeboxes” — smallest, oldest and cheapest doubles, and the budget default for first-years. | Traditional | $3,690/sem double |
| Holmes Hall / McCabe Hall Two rooms sharing a bath — the cheapest way out of a hall bathroom. Double suite $4,565. | Suite | $4,210/sem triple suite |
| Calhoun Courts An apartment kitchen at a below-Douthit price, so no MicroFridge needed. Double apartment $5,820. | Apartment | $4,455/sem shared bedroom quad |
| Byrnes Hall Wet-core semi-private baths — toilet, sink and shower behind a locking door — in a central Bryan Mall location. | Traditional highrise | $5,370/sem double |
| Douthit Hills West Newest and priciest; full-size beds, in-unit laundry, full kitchens, Douthit Hub fitness and dining. Full-kitchen quad $6,030, private double bedroom $6,564, studio $7,157. | Apartment | $5,465/sem efficiency quad |
Rates are per semester and the 2026-27 sheet is still labelled Proposed, pending Board of Trustee approval. Housing rates are room-only — the mandatory first-year meal plan is a separate charge and is not included below. Rates compiled from the university’s published housing rates, August 2026. Always confirm on the official rates page.
Who has to live on campus
First-year and Bridge students only. All unmarried first-year and Bridge students under 21 at enrollment who do not live with a parent or legal guardian in Anderson, Oconee or Pickens County must live in University-owned housing for fall and spring. Built-in exemptions are marriage, being 21 or older at enrollment, and commuting from a parent or guardian’s home in those three counties; anything else needs an appeal through Housing Assignments. Transfer students are not required to live on campus and get no housing guarantee.
What the room already includes
A bed, an individual desk and chair, and a chest of drawers per resident, plus closet space — note that many halls use open closets rather than doored ones — and venetian blinds. Mirrors are not included. The rate covers high-speed internet and IPTV, and laundry is free campus-wide. Calhoun Courts, Lightsey Bridge I and II, Thornhill Village and Douthit Hills West are apartments with a living area, private bathrooms and a kitchen; Douthit West adds in-unit laundry, and its four-bedroom efficiency plan swaps the full kitchen for cabinets, a sink, a microwave and a mini fridge.
Fridge & microwave rules
Bring your own, but capped at 3.6 cubic feet — smaller than most retail “dorm fridges.” Microwaves are effectively banned outside the apartments: the MicroFridge is the only allowed microwave in non-apartment residence halls, rentable through Collegiate Concepts and delivered before move-in. Unnecessary in Calhoun Courts, Lightsey Bridge I and II, Thornhill and Douthit West, where most kitchen appliances including microwaves are permitted.
What you cannot bring
Air conditioners and space heaters; cooking appliances such as rice cookers, toaster ovens and hot plates; candles and wax warmers; halogen lamps; LED strip lights; extension cords; pets other than fish; weapons; fireworks; incense. Standalone microwaves outside the apartments, and refrigerators over 3.6 cubic feet. On decor: no drilling or nailing is allowed, and curtains must be fire resistant, with a tension rod recommended. Most halls do permit lofting under published guidelines.
