Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- A MicroFridge is already in every room, and bringing your own fridge or microwave is a policy violation — “No additional microwaves or refrigerators are allowed.” This kills the single most common item on every college checklist.
- A toaster is allowed; a toaster oven and an air fryer are not. Also banned: Instant Pots and pressure cookers, slow cookers, electric grills, space heaters and window AC units.
- No extension cords of any kind, and a hard cap of two UL-listed 15-amp surge strips per student.
- Bed risers and all third-party lofts are prohibited — university lofts only.
- Curtains must be manufactured tagged fire-retardant, and flags and signs in windows are banned outright, so a generic big-box curtain panel is non-compliant.
- Air conditioning is a paid tier, not a given. An AC hall costs about $2,824 more per year, and portable and window units are banned — a fan is the only fix in Pritchard, Hoge, Slusher and Hillcrest.
- E-scooters and lithium-ion transport devices cannot even be stored or charged indoors.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.
| Hall | Style | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Pritchard Large hall on the Upper Quad side; cheapest tier, community kitchen and courtyard. No air conditioning. | Traditional | $3,785/sem (Cat A) |
| Hoge Typical room is 12' x 15' — one of the more generous non-AC doubles. | Traditional | $3,785/sem (Cat A) |
| Slusher Tower building with closets instead of the standard clothing units. The Slusher Wing restricts lofting both beds. | Traditional | $3,785/sem (Cat A) |
| West Ambler Johnston Modern coed hall, air conditioned, heavy first-year assignment. | Traditional | $5,197/sem (Cat B) |
| Creativity and Innovation District (CID) Newest build; air conditioning plus art studios, a makerspace and classrooms in the building. | Traditional | $5,197/sem (Cat B) |
| New Residence Hall East Two or three two-person rooms connected by a bathroom and, in some cases, a common living space. | Suite | $5,197/sem (Cat B) |
| Graduate Life Center at Donaldson Brown 179 graduate students, private attached bathroom per room, Au Bon Pain in the building. | Private bath | $7,031/sem (Cat C, single) |
Virginia Tech does not publish per-hall rates — three categories apply campus-wide, set by air conditioning and occupancy, and each figure below includes the mandatory $197 per semester telecom fee. A dining plan is also mandatory for all on-campus students, defaulting to Unlimited at $3,413 per semester. Rates compiled from the university’s published housing rates, August 2026. Always confirm on the official rates page.
Who has to live on campus
First-year students only. The contract requires all entering first-years to live in the residence halls unless they live with parents or close relatives established in the community, are married and living with a spouse, are military veterans of at least six months active duty, or are at least 21 years old. There is no requirement for sophomores and above — which is why the off-campus market here is so large.
What the room already includes
A twin bed with Twin XL mattress, desk, chair, dresser and clothing storage, plus an in-room sink and mirror — the sink is standard in most VT halls. Every room also gets a university-provided MicroFridge. The rate covers heat, water and wireless. There is no apartment-style undergraduate housing with an in-unit full kitchen — every hall routes to a shared community kitchen instead.
Fridge & microwave rules
A MicroFridge is provided free in every room, and personal ones are banned outright — “No additional microwaves or refrigerators are allowed.” The installed unit is a 3.1 cubic foot fridge/freezer with a 0.7 cubic foot microwave head, and the rental is included in the price of room and board. There is no size or wattage cap to shop against because there is no allowance at all.
What you cannot bring
Air conditioning units, space heaters, pressure cookers and Instant Pots, slow cookers, electric grills, air fryers, toaster ovens, 3D printers and laser engravers — plus any extra microwave or fridge. Small appliances with fully enclosed heating elements are fine if UL listed, so a toaster and a coffee maker are allowed. Also banned: extension cords of any kind (max two UL-listed 15-amp surge strips per student), halogen and high-intensity lamps, candles and incense, personal wireless routers, bed risers and any outside or self-built loft, live trees and wreaths, and animals other than non-carnivorous fish. String lights only if UL approved and cool-to-touch. E-scooters and lithium-ion transport devices may not be used or even stored and charged in the building.
