Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- The bed is 36" x 80" x 8", not the 38" Twin XL that retail bedding bundles are cut for. Twin XL sheets fit but sit loose — and because the mattress is only 8" thick, deep-pocket Twin XL sheets sold for 12–15" mattresses will billow and pop off. Buy standard-depth.
- Do not buy a mini-fridge or microwave. A MicroFridge is in every residence hall room already, shared between roommates, and bringing your own is prohibited. This is one of the largest line items on a typical checklist and it is pure waste here.
- Air fryers and Instant Pots are “store but not use.” Unusual phrasing — UC Davis lets you keep the item in the room but bans operating it. Crock pots, rice cookers, toasters and toaster ovens are in the same category.
- Laundry is pay-per-load at $1.75 to wash and $1.75 to dry through the CSC Pay app, despite utilities, internet and cable being bundled.
- UC Davis runs on quarters, not semesters. A quarterly figure is roughly a third of the year, not half — do not mentally double it. Also note the unusual 33% cap on exterior door coverage.
- ⚠ UC Davis contradicts itself on billing. The Residence Halls general information page says the meal plan cost “is included in the contract rate,” while the fees page prices room and meal plans as separate charges. Budget them as additive.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.
| Hall | Style | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| The Green at West Village — double bedroom The lowest published on-campus room rate overall, in a full-kitchen apartment. | Apartment | $10,908/yr ($3,636/quarter) |
| Residence hall triple The cheapest residence hall room — but a mandatory meal plan sits on top, taking it to about $18,210/yr. | Traditional | $12,519/yr ($4,173/quarter) |
| Residence hall double The default freshman assignment. Rates do not vary by hall — only by occupancy. | Traditional | $14,457/yr ($4,819/quarter) |
| The Green at West Village — single bedroom A private bedroom in a shared apartment with a full kitchen. | Apartment | $16,368/yr ($5,456/quarter) |
| Residence hall single The most expensive traditional option. | Traditional | $17,055/yr ($5,685/quarter) |
| The Green at West Village — studio The most expensive on-campus option published. | Apartment | $23,736/yr ($7,912/quarter) |
UC Davis runs on quarters, not semesters — rates are published both annually and per quarter across three quarters, so a quarterly figure is about a third of the year. Room and meal plans are billed as separate line items: room-only rates are listed above, and meal plans add $5,691 to $7,782 a year. The meal plan is mandatory for residence halls. ⚠ Note that UC Davis’s general information page describes the meal cost as included in the contract rate while the fees page prices it separately — budget them as additive. Rates compiled from the university’s published housing rates, August 2026. Always confirm on the official rates page.
Who has to live on campus
Not required. UC Davis offers only a guarantee — housing is guaranteed for one year to eligible incoming first-year students, and the eligibility page frames it as opt-in for “incoming freshmen who choose to live on campus.” Because there is no mandate there is no exemption process; the only hard limit is that residence hall students must be under 24.
What the room already includes
A bed, dresser or built-in chest of drawers, closet or wardrobe, desk, desk chair and a desk lamp per student, plus a MicroFridge, wastebasket and recycling bin shared per room. The rate covers all utilities, high-speed internet, cable TV and access to computer centres, and all rooms are carpeted. Laundry is not free — $1.75 per wash and $1.75 per dry through the CSC Pay app, since the old laundry-card system ended in January 2025. The apartment-style options (The Green at West Village, Primero Grove, Orchard Park, ANOVA Aggie Square) have full kitchens; the residence halls have only shared kitchenettes.
Fridge & microwave rules
Provided free in every residence hall room — do not buy one. A MicroFridge is included and shared between roommates, and additional fridges and microwaves are banned without authorisation. No cubic-foot or wattage cap applies to the halls because you cannot bring one. The caps that do exist apply only to UC Davis apartments: one refrigerator at 4.5 cubic feet and 35 inches, and one microwave at 800 watts per bedroom.
What you cannot bring
Appliances you may store but not use: cooking knives, air fryers, toasters, toaster ovens, crock pots, hot air popcorn poppers, hot plates, waffle irons, rice cookers, broilers and any device with an open heating element. Also banned: portable and space heaters, torchiere halogen lamps, power tools, 3D printers, lasers, barbecues and gas grills, and any non-UL-approved device. Electrical wiring may not be modified and octopus or splice adapters are prohibited, though grounded UL-approved power strips with fuses are permitted. No candles, incense or open flames, and incandescent string lights are explicitly banned; decorative lights may not be hung outside rooms. No nails or screws — poster putty, thumb tacks and push pins are fine — and no painting, decals or stickers. Residents may cover only 33% of their exterior room door. Tapestries are subject to a flame-retardant requirement. Beds may not be triple-bunked and lofting must follow university procedure. Pets: fish only, in an aquarium of 10 gallons or less with roommate agreement.
