On-campus housing: 2026-27 rates & what's included

Room dimensions are only half the story — here is what UC San Diego actually charges to live on campus, what shows up in the room before you unpack, and the appliance rules that decide what you can bring.

Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules

  • The published room rate is not the real bill. UCSD hall rates are housing ONLY — a dining plan is separately required at most colleges and adds $5,100–$8,200 a year for incoming students.
  • Skip the mini-fridge if you are in apartment-style housing (Seventh, Eighth, Sixth apartments, Pangea, Rita Atkinson, Pepper Canyon) — those units have full kitchens. Only residence-hall rooms need one.
  • If you do buy: fridge must be under 5.0 cubic feet and microwave 750 watts or less, one of each per room. Coordinate with roommates so you do not end up with duplicates.
  • Pepper Canyon West is a 12-month contract, not 9 months — compare it per month, not sticker to sticker.

Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.

Bed size: Twin XL — UCSD tells residents to bring bedding for an extra-long twin (36×80); some college pages quote 35×80 or 38×83 frames. Retail Twin XL (39×80) is the correct buy everywhere on campus.

Who has to live on campusNo requirement, but UCSD guarantees two years of on-campus housing to incoming first-year and transfer students — you must move in during Fall or Winter of your admit year and hold the contract for the full period or the guarantee is forfeited. Rates above are housing only; a dining plan is separately required at most colleges.
What's already in the roomBed with XL twin mattress, desk, chair, and a dresser or wardrobe per resident, plus closet space. Apartment-style rooms add under-bed storage, a full kitchen, a bathroom and living-room furniture. Linens, pillows, mattress pads and towels are NOT supplied.
Fridge & microwave rulesBring your own — UCSD does not provide or rent a MicroFridge. One fridge per room under 5.0 cubic feet, UL-approved; microwaves 750 watts or less. Apartment-style colleges include a full kitchen, so a mini-fridge is unnecessary there.
Leave these at homeCandles, incense and open flames; halogen lamps; extension cords (surge-protected power strips only); hot plates, toasters and indoor grills; space heaters and personal air conditioners; weapons and fireworks; pets other than fish under 30 gallons; personal furniture; drilling or mounting anything; adhesive stickers and stars on walls.
