University of California San Diego Off-Campus Housing Guide (2026)

There is essentially no purpose-built by-the-bed student housing near UCSD — students sign conventional 12-month per-unit leases at market-rate communities and split the rent. The concentration is University City/UTC (Costa Verde, Nobel Drive and Judicial Drive, half a mile to a mile and a half out, served by free Triton Transit shuttles, MTS SuperLoop 201/202 and the Blue Line trolley), then La Jolla Village and Clairemont, with cheaper overflow in Mira Mesa.

How this compares with living on campus

UC San Diego's cheapest on-campus option is Seventh College / apartment mini-double at $11,033 per nine-month academic year, housing only. Remember that campus rates often bundle things an apartment does not — and an apartment lease usually runs 12 months instead of the academic year.

What you'll need

Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules

Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.

Bed size matters here. Twin XL — UCSD tells residents to bring bedding for an extra-long twin (36×80). Standard retail Twin XL (39×80) sheets are the right buy for every college; nothing on campus uses a standard twin, full or queen.

Furnished units still need bedding, kitchen basics and cleaning gear; unfurnished rentals add the big anchors — mattress, bed frame, sofa and a table. Our checklist filters by furnished vs unfurnished so you only pack what your unit is missing.
