Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- Extension cords AND power strips are both banned. Most schools ban cords but require a UL power strip; QU bans both and mandates direct wall plugs. This is a near-universal packing-list item that will be confiscated.
- Air fryers and toaster ovens are hall-dependent, not campus-banned. They are legal in Hill, Complex, Whitney Village and York Hill kitchens and illegal in any room where beds are located — so buy only after the housing assignment is known.
- Instant Pots, Crock Pots and pressure cookers are banned everywhere, as are electric tea kettles and multi-cup coffee makers. A single-cup Keurig-style brewer is the only safe coffee purchase.
- QU contradicts itself on string lights. The What to Pack page lists string lights, LED strips and copper wire lights as prohibited, while the Residential Life policy page approves LED decorative lights. Assume banned until Residential Life confirms.
- Six housing types include a full kitchen — The Hill, The Complex, Crescent, Townhouses, Westview and Eastview — and The Complex adds a microwave. A mini-fridge purchase is wasted money there. Laundry is free.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.
| Hall | Style | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| The Ledges First-year standard room at the base rate — the cheapest tier on campus. | Traditional | $6,710/sem ($13,420/yr) |
| The Commons First-year traditional at the base rate, central to Mount Carmel campus life. | Traditional | $6,710/sem ($13,420/yr) |
| The Village Base rate but suite-configured, with a private full bath and a furnished common room — the best value per amenity. | Traditional/suite | $6,710/sem ($13,420/yr) |
| The Suites Larson, Perlroth and Troup — sophomore suite style, a modest step up from the base rate. | Suite | $7,050/sem ($14,100/yr) |
| The Complex Bakke, Founders and Sahlin — a fully furnished kitchen with stove, oven and microwave plus a kitchen island, so no mini-fridge needed. | Apartment | $7,160/sem ($14,320/yr) |
| Eastview Fully air conditioned with a full-size refrigerator and stove/oven; the most expensive on-campus option and the only true private single with a kitchen. | Apartment (senior) | $8,530/sem ($17,060/yr) |
QU publishes both per-semester and per-year figures — check which column you are reading. Meal plans are mandatory for residential students and billed separately at $2,390 to $3,700 per semester, with the Gold plan auto-assigned unless changed. Rates compiled from the university’s published housing rates, August 2026. Always confirm on the official rates page.
Who has to live on campus
Three years. All full-time undergraduates are “required to live in QU housing for their first three years (until the end of their sixth academic semester).” Release is limited to married students or domestic partners, students with dependents, anyone 24 or older by 1 September, veterans, university-approved study abroad, or documented hardship. A proximity release exists for students within 25 miles living with immediate family who meet specific criteria.
What the room already includes
A bed, dresser or wardrobe, desk and chair. Housing includes Wi-Fi, live-in professional staff, 24-hour maintenance and free laundry. Air conditioning is confirmed in Whitney Village and Eastview but is not published for The Village or The Complex, so it is not campus-wide. Kitchen-equipped housing is a large category — The Hill, The Complex, Crescent, Townhouses, Westview and Eastview are all standard-with-kitchen; Eastview has a full-size refrigerator, sink and stove/oven, and The Complex has a fully furnished kitchen with a stove, oven and microwave plus an island.
Fridge & microwave rules
Bring your own or rent a MicroFridge — QU supplies nothing in the traditional halls. The cap is 3.6 cubic feet, and no microwave wattage cap is published. Skip the purchase entirely in the kitchen-equipped buildings: The Hill, The Complex, Crescent, Townhouses, Westview, Eastview and Whitney Village.
What you cannot bring
Extension cords and power strips are both prohibited — approved appliances must plug directly into a wall socket. Banned everywhere: Crock Pots, Instant Pots and pressure cookers, indoor grills, coil burners, portable stovetops, hot plates, propane tanks, electric tea kettles and multi-cup coffee makers, butane torches, fire pits, halogen lamps, lava lamps, smoke machines, live Christmas trees, hookahs, dart boards, hoverboards and e-skateboards, pools, fireworks and weapons, and non-approved air conditioners. All candles — burning, burnt, new or decorative — plus incense. Air fryers, toaster ovens and Foreman grills are permitted only in the Hill, Complex, Whitney Village or York Hill kitchens, never in a room where beds are located. Tapestries covering the ceiling or light fixtures are banned, as is anything hanging from ceilings. Non-university lofts are prohibited and window screens may not be removed. Pets: fish in a tank no larger than 10 gallons.
