Where students live
FGCU sits in far south Lee County off Ben Hill Griffin Pkwy with almost nothing walkable next to it, so off-campus students cluster along the I-75 corridor between exits 123 and 128 — Gulf Coast Town Center, Alico Road and Estero. Purpose-built communities like The Reef and Eagle Walk sit 3–4 miles out and run private FGCU shuttles; everyone else drives.
Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- Bed size is not uniform. South Village is Twin XL, but North Lake Village uses FULL-size beds in Oak, Mangrove, Cypress, Falcon, Egret, Sandpiper and Pelican, and West Lake Village is full-size in every unit. FGCU’s own move-in guide tells those residents to buy full sheets.
- North Lake Village and West Lake Village apartments already include a full-size kitchen fridge — a mini-fridge is wasted money there.
- Smart speakers (Alexa, Google Home) are banned, along with string lights and personal wireless routers.
- If you do need a fridge for South Village: max 5 cubic feet, microwave max 1,000 watts.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.

How it compares to a dorm
The cheapest room on campus is North Lake Village at about $2,657 per semester for a two-bedroom double — roughly $665 a month across a four-month term, with utilities, Wi-Fi and a full kitchen included. The furnished student communities start near $745 a bed plus utilities, so they are close on price once you add power and internet; the unfurnished I-75 apartments are cheaper per square foot but you are buying every stick of furniture.
What you'll need
The two purpose-built communities come furnished, so you are shopping soft goods: bedding, towels, kitchenware, storage and a shower caddy. The conventional I-75 apartments are unfurnished — budget for the big anchors first: mattress, bed frame, sofa and a table.
