Where students live
College Station is a car-and-bus town, and the off-campus market is unusually dominated by purpose-built student housing. The densest corridors are Northgate immediately north across University Drive (the bar district, walkable, newest high-rises), Eastgate from Cooner Street to Dominik Drive near the sorority houses, the Historic District and Wolf Pen Creek area by Target and HEB, South Knoll north of Harvey Mitchell Parkway, and Wellborn Road running south into Bryan where the cheaper large-format complexes sit. Anyone within about a mile walks or bikes; everyone else uses Aggie Spirit, which is free with a valid Texas A&M ID and runs night service on every off-campus route. Being “on the bus route” is the single most-advertised amenity in this market.
Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- The beds are 36" x 77" — a size that exists almost nowhere else. Standard twin sheets (75") are too short; Twin XL (80") fits but sits loose. Twin XL mattresses are available by request only.
- Three places use FULL 54" x 80" beds instead: White Creek Apartments, Gardens Apartments, and — the sneaky one — Hullabaloo Hall SINGLE rooms. Hullabaloo doubles and suites in the same building are 36" x 77".
- Extension cords are banned outright, along with toasters, toaster ovens, sandwich makers, George Foreman grills, panini presses, Instant Pots and pressure cookers, and induction cooktops. Air fryers, crock pots and rice cookers are allowed.
- Fridge max 4.4 cubic feet including the freezer; microwave max 700 watts. Many retail “dorm” microwaves exceed 700W.
- Do not buy a loft kit or bed risers — every bed already lofts and third-party lofts are prohibited.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first.

How it compares to a dorm
The cheapest bed on campus is a Ramp Hall double at $2,629 a semester — about $657 a month across a four-month term, with gas, electricity, cable, internet and free laundry included. The furnished student complexes start near $575–$630 a bed plus electricity, so on price they are genuinely competitive; the difference is that off campus you sign a 12-month lease and pay through the summer. The one that actually undercuts everything is Scandia at $899 for a two-bedroom — about $450 each — but it is unfurnished.
What you'll need
Most of the student market here comes furnished, so you are shopping soft goods: bedding, towels, kitchenware, storage and a shower caddy. Scandia and the other conventional apartments are unfurnished — budget for the anchors first: mattress, bed frame, sofa and a table. One Texas A&M-specific note: if you are moving out of a dorm, your 36" x 77" sheets will not fit a normal apartment mattress, so plan on buying new bedding either way.
