Dorm Bed Sizes by University

Every college packing list tells you to buy Twin XL sheets. We read what all 272 of these universities actually publish, and only 53 of them are a plain Twin XL campus with nothing else to check.

Why this page exists. We went through the housing pages, hall pages, floor plans and packing lists of all 272 universities on this site and wrote down what each one publishes about the size of its mattress. Every entry below is quoted from the university itself. Where a school publishes nothing, this page says so instead of guessing. Measure your own mattress if you can. If you cannot, start here, then confirm with your housing office.

Campuses that are not Twin XL at all

5 universities that say, in their own words, that the standard bed on campus is not an extra-long twin. On these campuses the usual college checklist buys the wrong size for the whole school. Two of them keep a small number of XL mattresses for students who ask.

Twin XL length, but a narrow mattress

35 campuses publish a mattress 36 inches wide. Twin XL fitted sheets are cut for 38 to 39 inches, so the length is right and the width sits a little loose. That is a comfort question rather than a fit problem, and corner straps solve it for a few dollars.

Check your building before you buy

179 campuses — the majority, which is the real finding of this page. Either the university uses more than one bed size, or it hedges, or it publishes nothing usable at all. The quote under each school is what that university actually says. Nobody selling you sheets will tell you this.

Straightforward Twin XL

53 campuses that publish one bed size, extra-long twin, with no exception we could find. Buy the standard set.

How we know

Every line on this page came from a university’s own website — a housing page, a hall page, a floor plan, a room-dimensions table or a move-in packing list. Nothing here is from a bedding retailer or a college listicle, and nothing is estimated. Where a school publishes no figure, this page says so instead of guessing.

Two cautions we apply to every number. First, a great many inch figures on housing sites measure something other than the mattress — the bed frame, the height of the bed, a window, a wardrobe, the clearance under a loft. We only publish a number where the source says what it measures. Second, universities contradict themselves more often than you would expect: a hall page and a packing list from the same school regularly disagree. Where that happens we quote both and say so, rather than picking one.

Bed sizes for reference: a standard Twin mattress is 39 x 75 inches, a Twin XL is 39 x 80, and a Full is 54 x 75. A Twin XL fitted sheet will not fit a standard Twin bed, and a standard Twin sheet will not reach the end of a Twin XL.

Figures are a September 2026 snapshot and universities do change their furniture. If your school’s page has changed, or you find a bed we have wrong, tell us and we will re-check it.
